When instinct tells you to take some step toward a professional or personal goal, you have just five seconds to get started before your brain kicks in with 100 reasons to put it off. So follow NASA’s model and count down from five, then take some action. You will be amazed at the results.
Aboard the Carnival Vista’s maiden Caribbean cruise, at the annual conference for Cruises Inc., CruiseOne and Dream Vacation travel agents, keynote speaker Mel Robbins said her proven method of counting “5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Act” sets the cerebral cortex in motion and counteracts our all-too-human fears and tendency toward procrastination. Whether the job at hand is cold-calling a client or saying hello to people we don’t know at a conference, take a lesson from NASA (and Nike, too) and count down, then just do it.

At this Dream Vacations conference and all others, “an enormous amount of professional growth will come from changing your behavior, and instead of hanging out with people you know, counting 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 and introducing yourself to someone new,” she said. “Make a decision to do something positive versus defaulting to what's easiest.”
Like Michelangelo, who actually left town when the Pope first asked him to paint the Sistine Chapel, we all have moments of doubt and laziness. That’s especially true for small businesses, where there often is no one to push us.
“We are never going to feel like doing what we have to do; I get that you don't feel like working that hard. But five seconds can change your business. So the rule is, the moment you have an instinct to act on a goal, 5-4-3-2-1 and physically move.”
