American Airlines has filed an application with the Department of Transportation (DOT) to operate daily nonstop service between Los Angeles and Beijing.
Beijing is a major international hub and would allow American, which already flies to Beijing from Dallas/Fort Worth and Chicago O’Hare, a number of connections to Asian cities from Los Angeles.
At the moment, the only carrier to operate the service is Air China. American’s application comes two weeks after Delta Air Lines submitted a similar one, hoping to fly to Beijing from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX). Both airlines are hoping to start the service by the end of the year.
With a limited number of slots available at LAX, the DOT will make the final decision as to which airline gets to fly to Beijing.
