Cruisers Killed in Tunis Museum Attack
MSC Cruises and Costa Cruises have both reported that cruise passengers were present Wednesday during an attack by gunmen on the National Bardo Museum in Tunis, Tunisia.
MSC Cruises announced in a statement that nine guests sailing on the MSC Splendida were killed during the museum attack. Twelve were wounded, while nine passengers are still unaccounted for. The guests were on an MSC Cruises shore excursion when the attack occurred.
The MSC Splendida left port at La Goulette, Tunis, Thursday morning. Initial reports state that those killed were of Japanese, French, Spanish and Colombian nationalities and that no Americans are injured or missing.
Costa Cruises passengers were also participating in shore excursions at the museum at the time of the attack. The company reports that 13 passengers had not returned onboard the Costa Fascinosa when the ship left Tunis early Thursday morning, but has not released information detailing whether any cruisers were killed or injured.
Both lines have dispatched support teams to Tunis to properly identify the cruisers killed in the attack, assist the wounded and track down missing passengers. Costa will cancel all future stops at Tunisian ports, as well.
Authorities report at least 20 people were killed in the attack
