Delta Gets Approval For LaGuardia Update
by Daniel McCarthy /Delta's terminals at LaGuardia will be upgraded.
Delta Air Lines will rebuild its two terminals at New York’s LaGuardia Airport, joining in on the airport’s $4 billion renovation that was approved last month.
The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey approved Delta’s plan last week and said it would provide $600 million to help fund it.
Upgrades at Delta terminals C and D include more space for taxiways with dual lanes for quicker transport in and out of runaways, a new centralized check-in lobby with security checkpoints and baggage claim, a larger Delta Sky Club, wider concourses, larger gate areas and more concession space.
With the upgrade, Delta will operate 37 gates of LaGuardia with 275 departures a day out of those gates. The deal includes an extension of Delta's leases at those terminals to 2050.
Construction will begin "as soon as possible," Delta said in a statement.
Last month, Vice President Joe Biden joined N.Y. Governor Andrew Cuomo, Port Authority executive director Pat Foye and representatives from American Airlines, JetBlue, United, Southwest, Air Canada and Delta at LaGuardia to break ground on a $4 billion renovation designed to "finally bring LaGuardia into the 21st century."
That renovation includes a complete demolishing and rebuild as “state of the art facilities” of terminals A and B.
The airport will also be moved closer to the Grand Central Parkway, which will increase flight operations by 240%, and a new roadway network, a 3,000-space parking garage, AirTran and ferry service, and a central terminal building will be added.
At that time, Delta said it was in advance discussions with the Port Authority to redevelop its terminals.
