FESTIVAL CITY
Edmonton knows how to have fun! With its exploding arts scene, breathtaking river valley, diverse eats and other unexpected finds, the Festival City can keep you busy.
Canada’s Festival City is always celebrating something, from music, film, and theatre, to heritage, food, accordions, dragon boats, and winter. With over 30 festivals throughout the year, it’s easy to find a reason to celebrate.
Edmonton, the capital of Alberta, sits on the boundary between prairie lands and boreal forest, bisected by the lush ravines of the North Saskatchewan River.
Escape the urban bustle without leaving the city in the parks and pathways that wind along the river –the longest stretch of urban parkland on the continent. In the summer, check out an outdoor festival, or hike, bike or blade along 150 km (93 mi) of trails. Tee off on one of the valley’s golf courses. When the snow falls, embrace Edmonton’s passion for winter and go cross
country skiing or snowshoeing. Carve some powder on four downhill ski slopes in and around Edmonton.
Look out your hotel window to see wisps of fog hovering over the North Saskatchewan River valley. It’s a perfect time for an early morning power walk and to snap some photos as the sun comes up. Spend the entire morning jogging along the endless river valley pathways then head to the market downtown –the city’s oldest. As you stroll the rows of stalls score a stunning handmade necklace, or some local buffalo jerky; the market emphasizes organic products –everything from soap to salted caramel.
On to West Edmonton Mall where you will find the world’s largest indoor waterpark. Browse over 800 shops, 9 World class attractions then head to Bourbon Street, where there is no shortage of dining options.
Nearby are the glass and steel curves of the new Alberta Art Gallery. It’s equally as stunning inside –the visiting exhibits are amazing!
Take a guided tour through the stately Alberta Legislature, head south across the river, bound for Whyte Avenue and the funky Old Strathcona District. If any part of this city never sleeps, this is it. It’s always teeming with people. Become part of the crowd gathered around a mime and a stilt walker.
There are so many great restaurants here your challenge will be to make up your mind. Treat yourself to some fine bistro fare before heading over to catch a play at the Varscona Theatre.
Afterward, take time to head to one of Edmonton’s many blues clubs. The people-watching is almost as good as the band. You will most likely end up at an after-hours jam session with a bunch of new friends.
At day’s end make your way back to your hotel and into the tub for a good long soak. Tomorrow is a new day in Edmonton, watching the golden sunrise over the river valley and knowing there is even more to explore.
