In Memorium: Maxine Mayer Silverstein, Mann Travel, Charlotte, NC
by Cheryl Rosen /
TMR notes with sadness the passing of Maxine Mayer Silverstein, who with her husband Gary co-owned Mann Travels in Charlotte, NC.
Maxine passed away on July 6. She was 72 years old.
Maxine was born in Newark, NJ, and lived in Brooklyn until her family moved to Charlotte when she was 11. She met Gary at Myers Park Junior High in a “love story that spanned nearly 60 years,” her family told the Charlotte Observer. She began her travel career at Eastern Airlines before launching Mann Travel with Gary.
“Maxine loved all of the travel industry people we’ve been associated over the past 38 years in the travel business and before that when she worked at Eastern Airlines in their Vacation Planning Dept. (they called it “Happy Holidays”). Her sickness and passing were so fast it’s still hard to believe she’s gone,” Gary told TMR.
In her eulogy, Maxine's daughter Kara shared a few lessons she said she learned from here Mom: "You should be nice to everyone but that doesn't mean you have to like them. Most stores will do a price adjustment if something goes on sale after you buy it. And always make a reservation -- and sometimes make two."
Maxine is survived by Gary and Kara as well as well as a son, five grandchildren and a twin sister.
In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for memorial contributions to Jewish Family Services and/or Temple Israel in Charlotte.
