Maximize Your Experience at Travel MarketPlace
by Chris Ryall /The upcoming Travel MarketPlace in Toronto will offer attendees numerous learning and networking opportunities.
But how to make the most of the conference?
Travel Market Report asked five of the speakers at this year’s Travel Marketplace for their suggestions on how attendees can maximize their time and hone their networking strategies.
What’s the secret of getting the most out of a conference?
“Before you go, be brutally honest with yourself and ask: ‘What I am doing now that’s holding me back, and what do I need to change it?’ Then, look at the agenda, the roster of speakers, other attendees, and the suppliers that will be attending.
“It’s impossible to retain everything you’ll hear, but if you put a little more energy and focus on those that directly address your needs, you’ll get better results. That doesn’t mean skip everything else - definitely not! In fact, it brings me to the most important tip I have to offer: Keep your eyes, ears, and especially your mind - wide open!” -- Nolan Burris, president and chief vision-eer, Future Proof Travel
Set your goals
“I think the best way to approach a conference is to set a goal with three parts. Look at the schedule and see what courses/presentations/panels/tradeshows will help you walk away with the best information and ideas. First, remember that knowledge is power. Try to attend sessions that deal with something you don’t know.
“Second, make real connections during all the networking opportunities. Make a connection, don’t just hand out business cards and come home with a bunch of cards. Concentrate on meeting high quality people that you can build valuable relationships with.
“Finally, find your motivation. Look for sessions or events that will inspire or motivate you to be better and do more with your business.” -- Jennifer Doncsecz, president, VIP Vacations Inc.
Come prepared
"I believe there are actually two secrets to success at a conference – one happens before the show and the second one after the show. First, come with specific goals. Review your business now and determine where you need help, contacts, information or skills to help grow your business. Then focus your energy on those areas instead of trying to learn everything from everyone. As a part of that, make a list of the top ten questions you want answered and then ask them!
“The second secret is to commit to making significant changes as a result of your attendance. To come and listen and learn is nice, but basically worthless unless you do something with the knowledge gained. The greater the changes you are willing to make, the greater the benefits from the show and the greater the potential growth of your business.” -- Scott Koepf, senior vice president of sales, Avoya Travel
Don’t forget your business card
“To get the most from a conference you need to plan ahead. Research attendees so you’ll get an idea of who you want to talk to. You should also research the speakers ahead of time and only attend the sessions that really resonate with you. Bring lots of business cards to exchange and follow up after the event with every person you want to talk more with.” -- Tammy Levent, founder of T.A.S.K., the Travel Agents’ Success Kit
Approach it like a fam
“A conference is like a fam trip, where opportunities abound for you to fulfill specific knowledge needs and specific networking needs that can enhance your business. Take a few minutes to draw up a game plan - an action plan - of conference takeaways that will ensure you receive a return on investment for the time you took to attend. Use the occasion to open your eyes to new ideas and seek out new resources that will allow you to continue working magic with your clients and your career.” -- Steve Gillick, president, Talking Travel
