Social media were abuzz yesterday with the story of a couple left ashore in the Bahamas—as the ship pulled away with the children on board.
A video taken by another passenger shows the distraught mother falling to her knees as the Norwegian Breakaway, sailing a seven-night cruise that began in New York on April 17, departed Nassau.
Norwegian noted that it waited an extra half an hour beyond the scheduled 5:30 departure time, and the woman still did not return, nor answer her cell phone. Finally, the husband agreed to disembark with the couple’s travel documents and wait for her while the two children stayed on board with their uncle and his family.
The YouTube crowd was not sympathetic to the couple. "You are told again and again what time to be back on the boat, generally an hour before the ship leaves port. You can't blame the ship's captain for keeping to a schedule," said one. “How they did not stick together as a family boggles my mind. What nitwits.”
Norwegian offered travel and lodging assistance to the couple, and made arrangements to reunite the family in New York.
