Norwegian Joy To Feature Custom Artwork From Noted Chinese Artist

Norwegian Cruise Line’s first ever ship specifically built for the Chinese market will feature custom artwork on its hull designed by Chinese artist Tan Ping.
Ping’s plans for the hull include a phoenix, which is appropriate because the bird “symbolizes beauty and good luck in Chinese culture, and Norwegian Joy will bridge across the West and the East and bring Chinese people’s best wish to the world and everyone in her path,” he said.
The artwork will be dominated by red and yellow, two traditionally Chinese colors.
Ping has spent his career in the art world as a painter, printmaker and educator. He headed the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Image and Landscape Design Project.
The Joy is scheduled to debut in summer 2017. When it enters service it will homeport in Shanghai and Beijing, and will accommodate 3,850 guests.
