Riviera Maya Projects Record Visitors for 2015
by Doug Gollan /Riviera Maya is expecting to welcome 4.5 million arrivals this year, up from just over 4.4 million last year and 1.2 million in 2000, according to tourism executives speaking at ILTM Americas, being held at the Fairmont Mayakoba.
Dario Flota Ocampo, CEO of the region’s tourist board, told the media that hotel inventory over the same period increased from 14,870 rooms to 42,011. Thompson Playa del Carmen will be the newest property when it opens next month, with its rooftop infinity pool and bar, as well as an outpost of popular New York eatery Catch.
Flota said despite the hyper growth, a coastline of 80 miles and strict development limiting the height of buildings has meant Riviera Maya is “not a crowded place.” Last year occupancy rose to a record 81.61%. He said the area’s dual audience of U.S. and Canadian visitors in the winter and Europeans in the summer is responsible for year-round growth.
Much of the attention has been around luxury product, and the area now boasts over a dozen five-star properties, including the Mayakoba development, home to Fairmont, Banyan Tree, and Rosewood, with an Andaz resort on the way.
Over a dozen brand-name spas and seven championship golf courses, in addition to adventure travel opportunities, are fueling Riviera Maya’s growth.
Rodrigo Esponda, regional director for North America for the Mexico Tourism Board, noted 2014 set a record with more than 29 million international visitors. U.S. visitors grew by over one million. To fuel further growth, the promotion entity is rolling out three more versions of its “Live it to believe it campaign.” Additionally, there is a larger spotlight on cuisine, focusing on the country’s long list of award-winning chefs.
