Trouble Still Brewing Under Iceland Volcano
While Icelandic authorities have reopened the airspace over the erupting Bardarbunga volcano, and dropped the air traffic alert level from red to orange, researchers say there is still a high probability of a more violent, disruptive eruption in the near future. The University of Cambridge has interpreted data from the volcano and found that the amount of magma underground is already more than twice the size of the 2010 Eyjafjallajokull eruption which led to "the cancellation of more than 100,000 airline flights."
The magma is currently moving and headed straight for a pack of melt; when the two meet, scientists say an eruption of historic size may result. Iceland, and the world air travel network, are still in danger, according to these researchers.
