VIA Rail Reports Double Digit Growth in Third Quarter

by Richard D'Ambrosio

Ridership on VIA Rail Canada increased by 11.7 percent in the most recently completed quarter as Canada’s national railroad benefited in part from a tourism boom resulting from the country’s 150th anniversary celebrations.

Passenger revenues increased nearly 15 percent for the period, including the all-time record month of August, where Via Rail posted passenger revenues of close to $38 million. The three-month period represented the 14th consecutive quarter of revenue growth and seventh consecutive quarter of ridership growth for Via Rail.

VIA Rail participated in many of Canada’s festivities across the country, including July 1, which marked Canada's official 150th birthday.
