Starting July 1, low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines will become the first U.S. carrier to implement mandatory temperature screenings for passengers and employees.
Frontier will screen passengers and crew members via touchless thermometers prior to boarding. If a customer’s temperature reading is 100.4 degrees or higher, they will be given the opportunity to rest before receiving a second check, time allows. Frontier will work with customers to rebook travel for a later date, or try to otherwise accommodate them.
The airline also recently implemented a series of new health and safety procedures, including requiring passengers and customer-facing employees to wear face masks, stringent new cleaning and disinfecting across all touchpoints and along every part of the journey, and having passengers complete check-in online and confirming they have not been exposed to the virus.
“Temperature screenings are the latest addition to our comprehensive, multi-layered approach to supporting the health and well-being of everyone onboard our aircraft,” said Frontier Airlines CEO Barry Biffle.
The carrier this week also announced that it was re-introducing 18 new routes for summer. The new flights scheduled to launch in June and July will include connections to cities like Boston, Chicago, Newark, and Philadelphia. The new routes will include connections to destinations throughout Florida, from Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Philadelphia and New York, with most routes schedule to launch in early July.
