German Pilot Strike Causes Lufthansa Cancellations
Lufthansa canceled 84 of its 170 long-haul flights to and from Germany Tuesday because of a one-day strike called by the German pilot union, Vereinigung Cockpit. On Monday, the union issued a statement that an offer to Lufthansa with a number of concessions had been rejected by the airline and a Lufthansa counter-offer was “insubstantial.” The union and the airline are at odds over a variety of issues, including pilot pay, pensions, and cost cuts. The Associated Press has also reported that a major dispute is over Lufthansa’s plan to cut pay for pilots wanting to retire early.
