The Best Hotels to Book in Portugal & Spain: Roundup From an ALGV FAM

by Denise Caiazzo  April 24, 2025
The Best Hotels to Book in Portugal & Spain: Roundup From an ALGV FAM

For travelers who have vacationed in the Caribbean or Mexico year after year, and they now want to try something a little bit different, ALG Vacations has the answer. The brand launched a European-focused Cities & Seas program (in the summer of 2023), which strategically pairs a few days at a sea destination to relax and rejuvenate (Mediterranean style) with a few days exploring a vibrant European city.

The customized packages offer North American travelers a taste of the familiar oceanfront all-inclusives they have chosen for their vacations in Mexico or the Caribbean, but expands their travel experience by introducing them to one of Europe’s great cities – all with brands that they know and trust (namely, ALG Vacations and the Hyatt Inclusive Collection).

We were fortunate to join in on a nine-day ALGV FAM to Portugal and Spain, where we stayed in or participated in site inspections at nine fabulous hotels and resorts, from a sprawling estate with a castle in the mountains to a glamorous boutique hotel just steps away from a shopping and culinary mecca in the city center. Here is a roundup of those properties, including each one’s standout feature, for travel advisors to consider when booking their clients on European adventures.

1. Secrets Mallorca Villamil Resort & Spa
2. Iberostar Selection Playa de Palma
3. Zoëtry Mallorca
4. Boeria Garden Hotel Porto Gaia
5. Hilton Porto Gaia
6. Intercontinental Porto – Palácio das Cardosas
7. Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel
8. Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade
9. The One Palácio de Anunciada
10. Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa

Secrets Mallorca Villamil Resort & Spa
A day-trip to Valldemossa.

Secrets Mallorca Villamil Resort & Spa (Mallorca, Spain)

With a castle-like structure at its center, this adults-only property strikes a welcoming balance between historical appeal, a sophisticated ambiance, a serene beach, and a lively but laid-back beach town experience. Set in the middle of the village of Peguera on the island of Mallorca, the resort’s reception doors open directly and conveniently onto streets lined with boutiques, cafes, and restaurants. Stepping through the property to the other side, it unveils beautifully landscaped winding pathways leading to lovely gardens and a white sand beach with calm water (and easy swimming in the cove), plus access to a boardwalk.

Overall, the property offers the quality of a Secrets resort, but with a European flair, meaning quieter and smaller (not so sprawling). It was notable that, in a departure from the brand that Americans know in Mexico and the Caribbean, guests were mainly in their 50s to 70s; and mostly European.

The main building was once a luxuriously appointed, privately-owned home. You can feel the history in spots like the library, with its piles of books and games, and a quirky painting above the fireplace of a young woman wearing a traditional white Elizabethan collar but blowing a big bubble of gum (staff say it begs the question, “Who is she?”).

The property has been expanded twice (with the newer rooms updated and more comfortable), so advisors would do well to do their research on room categories. Amenities include a beachfront swimming pool, an ocean-view spa, and access to the Preferred Club. Secrets Villamil is all-inclusive (a rarity in Europe), but guests can choose from breakfast-included, half-board, or the Unlimited-Luxury experience.

Dining will satisfy gastronomes; consider this delectable starter we enjoyed at one of the dinner events: vichyssoise of asparagus and green peas, with avocado tartar, truffle, and caviar.

Standout feature: It is a tie between the easy access to the village with its shops, restaurants, and cafes on one side of the property; and the gorgeous beach on the other side. But I would be remiss if I did not also mention the wonderful, must-do ½-day trip to Valldemossa. This medieval town perched high up in the Tramuntana Mountains is a UNESCO World Heritage Site brimming with spectacular architecture and rich history dating back to the 13th century, as well as cafes and boutiques offering treasures along its cobblestone streets.

Iberostar Selection Playa de Palma (Mallorca, Spain)

Iberostar Selection Playa de Palma pool and ocean view

Location is key for this property. It is set in the city just five minutes from the airport, but its Playa de Palma seafront opens onto a wide and beautiful white sand beach. Guests can choose to relax on the beach or hop on a bike and ride downtown. This Iberostar has a modern design; and the lobby area has a playful ‘80s Miami vibe. Sustainability is also an important focus throughout the hotel.

The property offers a range of accommodations, including double rooms, family rooms, and suites, some with sea views. It is family friendly, but also maintains adults-only areas. To keep things in perspective, management enforces the policy that the resort is not a party-town setting.

Dining options feature local and international cuisine, with restaurants such as the gourmet Guethary Restaurant by Chef Aitor Arregi. The breakfast buffet is fantastic, in both its offerings and its service. Amenities include a rooftop pool and bar with panoramic coastline views, a fitness center, and the Star Prestige area — an exclusive adults-only section offering premium services and facilities.

Standout feature: The standout feature is the adults-only rooftop infinity pool and bar, offering sensational views of the coastline — a perfect spot for relaxation and sunset cocktails.

Zoëtry Mallorca (Mallorca, Spain)

A 14th-century castle with a stunning courtyard, a neo-Gothic chapel (where you can do yoga or have a wedding!), a windmill, and a restored authentic Mallorcan manor house. This stunning complex of buildings in a rustic setting, in the mountain countryside, takes your breath away as soon as you set foot onto this historic estate in Llucmajor that is now Zoëtry Mallorca. It is just what you would expect from the brand, an impressive and luxurious boutique hotel with a focus on wellness, relaxation, and serenity.

The hotel features elegantly appointed rooms (no two of which are exactly the same, and a few of which are in the actual castle), lush gardens, tennis courts, a selection of pools, and a full spa offering personalized treatments.

Dining experiences include gourmet restaurants serving a fusion of local and international dishes, including dining al fresco on the terrace – all orchestrated by Andreu Genestra (winner of a Michelin star and Michelin green star). A unique highlight is the hotel’s wellness program, which includes yoga sessions, nutrition workshops, and access to wellness consultants, ensuring a holistic rejuvenation experience.

Although it feels like you are miles away from the stresses of civilization, Zoëtry Mallorca is only 15 minutes from the airport and 10 minutes from the beach (those looking to book here need to know that there is no beach on the property). It is perfect for a quiet getaway or a truly unforgettable destination wedding.

Standout feature: Although all of the rooms are luxurious, the rooms in the castle are spectacular, blending antiques and the traditional sandstone construction with modern touches. Who doesn’t want to say they stayed in a castle on the Balearic Islands of Spain?

Boeria Garden Hotel Porto Gaia (Gaia, Portugal)

Located in Vila Nova de Gaia (just steps away from the city’s main attractions and a 20-minute stroll from historic Porto), the Boeira Garden Hotel Porto Gaia is an urban retreat set within century-old gardens. It is serene, and you can feel the commitment to being eco-friendly and sustainable throughout the property.

The rooms are contemporary modern but warm, spacious, and bright, with floor-to-ceiling windows and terraces (some of which overlook the lovely gardens), and all of the accoutrements needed for a comfortable stay. The nature-inspired spa supports inner balance with a fabulous indoor saltwater pool, hydrotherapy, and a wonderful spa menu.

Dining options celebrate local Portuguese flavors. For wine lovers, the hotel’s Port wine cellar and connection to the traditions of Douro winemaking are a treat. Part of the Curio Collection by Hilton, this property is an excellent base for leisure or business stays.

Standout feature: The standout feature is its tranquil setting within close proximity to historic Porto, being less than two kilometers from iconic attractions, allowing guests to easily explore the city’s vibrant cultural and historical life.

Hilton Porto Gaia (Gaia, Portugal)

Hilton Porto Gaia
Photo: Hilton

The dramatic statement of the Hilton Porto Gaia’s black modern exterior carries into its massive lobby decorated with moody rich colors, textures, architectural features, and ample seating arrangements and a stunning lobby bar that set the stage for great conversation.

The property is housed in a refurbished wine warehouse in the heart of Vila Nova de Gaia, and is a short walk from the Douro River and several Port wine cellars. Accommodations are sleek and modern, and well-appointed. The Spa Wellness Center is luxurious, focusing on the element of water.

Dining options offer delicious selections of fresh, local dishes incorporating either Portuguese or Latin American flavors. And the selections at the bar do not disappoint, especially at the Cusco Bar with its spectacular view of Porto. The property also offers 2,195 square meters of event space.

Standout feature: The hotel’s claim to fame is its classic, panoramic view of Porto’s skyline, the Douro River, and the famous bridge from its Cusco Bar (and some rooms), providing guests with a picturesque backdrop during their stay.

Intercontinental Porto – Palácio das Cardosas (Porto, Portugal)

Classic elegance from top to bottom best describes the Intercontinental Porto – Palácio das Cardosas. Housed in a restored 18th-century palace in Porto’s city center, this hotel is a most luxurious, five-star hotel. As we toured the property, we heard many “oohs and aahs” from the travel advisors and press in our party.

The spacious rooms are beautifully appointed with traditional décor including antiques, rich textiles, gorgeous marble, and accented with some modern touches. The two-story suites are absolutely spectacular. Of particular note are the stunning views of the emblematic Avenida dos Aliados ─ and the hotel’s ideal location just steps away from the city’s best offerings.

It is no surprise that this elegant hotel also houses an art exhibit at select times throughout the year; delivers exceptional spa services; offers golf off-site at the oldest golf club in Portugal; and welcomes pets.

Culinary experiences match the upscale ambiance that is prevalent throughout the Intercontinental Porto – Palácio das Cardosas. Astória Restaurant’s sumptuous menu presents traditional Mediterranean and Portuguese cuisine with international touches; Pátio das Cardosas provides al fresco meals at the interior side patio; and the Cardosas Bar showcases superb cocktails, fabulous Port wines, and afternoon tea in the grand style décor of a traditional British library – not to mention its magnificent views over the city center.

Standout feature: The standout feature is its classic and undisputable elegance. And its prime location in the heart of the historic Baixa district, offering easy access to designer shops, scenic spots, and major attractions.

Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel (Gaia, Portugal)

Just a couple months ago, Tivoli Hotels & Resorts (based in Portugal and known for emphasizing cultural heritage at its locations) joined with Kopke (the world’s original purveyors of port) to open the newest luxury property in the historic region of Vila Nova de Gaia: the Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel.

Located on the south bank of the Douro River, the property is steeped in a unique heritage. An area that was home to Port wine cellars and warehouses for centuries is now a burgeoning wining and dining district ─ and this hotel is in the very center of it all. A fine choice for business or leisure travelers, the property’s rooms are imbued with understanded contemporary elegance, and select suites have timeless views of Porto across the river.

The modern gastronomy of Iberia is proudly presented by the three Michelin-starred Chef Nacho Manzano at its five restaurants and bars. Restorative wellness facilities include the sanctuary spa, a gym, hammam, sauna room, and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Also available are meeting rooms with stunning views, and 9,000 square meters of garden space for gatherings and events (including a magical backdrop for weddings).

Standout feature: The most distinctive aspect of the Tivoli Kopke Porto Gaia Hotel is the historic Kopke Port wine cellar, providing guests with a one-of-a-kind immersive experience in the world of Port wine. Portugal’s finest wines, including the brand’s own vintage Ports, can be sampled at any of the hotel’s restaurants and bars. Gaia is also the perfect location from which to embark on a half-day winery tour of the spectacular Douro Valley (which Viator and Living Tours orchestrate exceptionally well).

Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade (Lisbon, Portugal)

Situated on the prestigious Avenida da Liberdade (inspired by the famed boulevards of Paris), Sofitel Lisbon Liberdade combines its brand foundation of exceptional French style with welcoming Portuguese hospitality. This lavish, five-star hotel embodies luxury and modern glamour, with its black-and-gold décor and French theme of “art de vivre.”

Attention to detail and a sophisticated ambiance permeate the property. The hotel’s contemporary suites and rooms offer timeless European elegance, superb amenities, and vibrant city views. There is a gourmet restaurant and a fitness center onsite. Event space is also available. Its central location provides guests with convenient access to Lisbon’s cultural landmarks, upscale shopping, refined gastronomy, and vibrant nightlife.

Standout feature: In addition to its location, this boutique hotel’s standout feature is its luxury bedding. Sofitel’s down/feather pillows and its signature soft-top mattress were among the most comfortable I have ever slept on (and several of our travel companions agreed), making for an elevated, deep-sleep experience.

The One Palácio de Anunciada (Lisbon, Portugal)

A take-your-breath-away sanctuary in the heart of the bustling city encapsulates The One Palácio de Anunciada. With a privileged location in Lisbon’s most exclusive area just off the prestigious Avenida da Liberdade, this new (opened in 2019) five-star hotel is housed in a spectacular 16th-century palace.

The One Palácio da Anunciada masterfully combines the historic architecture of the original structure with modern amenities. Its sophisticated guestrooms and suites feature marble bathrooms, neutral tones, pure Egyptian cotton bedding, fresh modern touches, and original hand-painted Portuguese ceramic pieces.

The ambiance is one of elegance and distinction throughout, starting with its grand marble lobby dotted with contemporary art, and following all the way through to its serene courtyard with a lap pool and lavish gardens.

The hotel’s restaurant has become a gastronomic hot spot for Portuguese market fare in an elegant setting under a splendid coffered ceiling with hand-painted frescoes. Also onsite are a wine and tapas bar, the Despacio Spa at The One, a 24-hour gym, and unique event spaces.

Standout feature: The spacious but intimate courtyard ─ adorned with beautiful gardens, an infinity pool, Balinese daybeds, a café, and a resident working hawk with trainer ─ offers a peaceful escape in the heart of the city. While relishing the tranquility there, we could hardly believe that one of Lisbon’s most vivacious avenues was just a few blocks away.

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa (Lisbon, Portugal)

Tivoli Avenida Liberdade Lisboa is one of the Grande Dame hotels located on the vibrant Avenida da Liberdade. With a long history of elegance dating back 90 years, it is a place to see and be seen in Central Lisbon. Designer shopping and culinary adventures await on the avenue just outside its glamorous and expansive lobby.

Rooms are classically decorated, from Deluxe Rooms to the stunning Presidential Suite, many with city views. Wining and dining are true to the European tradition, especially at the property’s bustling Cervejaria Liberdade, known for serving some of best fish and seafood in the area. Another option on property is the trendy Sky Bar by SEEN, with its breathtaking views of the city and signature cocktails.

For those more relaxed moments, the Anantara SPA delivers exceptional pampering, and there is a swimming pool set in a semi-tropical garden. For special events, the hotel’s palatial 19th-century Conference and Events Centre is just across the courtyard.

Standout feature: The Sky Bar is renowned for its panoramic vistas over Lisbon, making it a chic, popular spot for evening cocktails and social gatherings.
