Low-Cost Icelandic Airline Play Shuts Down

Icelandic low-cost airline Play has shut down, canceling all upcoming flights. Play had offered budget flights between North America and cities across Europe.

The airline posted news about its closing on its website, advising current customers to check flights with other airlines. “Some carriers may offer special ‘rescue fares’ considering the circumstances,” the note says.

(Condor is one such airline offering these fares. Through Nov. 30, 2025, stranded or ticketed passengers can book a rescue fare on Condor’s transatlantic routes to or from Berlin (BER), Paris (CDG), and Prague (PRG), connecting via Frankfurt (FRA). To take advantage of this offer, affected passengers need to send proof of their original Play reservation along with full contact details to reservation@condor.com.)

No refunds will be issued by Fly for unusable tickets. Instead, the airline directs customers who booked tickets with a credit card, to contact the card for a refund.

The closure comes despite reaching a record high in revenue in August 2025 and having completed its financing that same month. At the time, the airline wrote, “This outcome confirms the confidence investors have in Play and the company’s future.”

Play was created in 2021, following the closure of low-cost carrier WOW Air (also a low-cost Icelandic carrier) in 2019.

Play operated flights out Baltimore (BWI), Boston (BOS), Newburgh (SFW) outside of New York City, and Washington, D.C. (IAD) to cities in Europe, usually through Reykjavik’s Keflavik airport.
