Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group has announced it will take over management of the San Clemente Palace Hotel in Venice, with plans to rebrand the iconic property as Mandarin Oriental, Venice in April 2026. Located on a private 12-acre island in the Venetian lagoon, the hotel offers a rare blend of serene resort living and convenient access to San Marco Square, just an eight-minute boat ride away.

The current hotel, a tranquil retreat within restored 900-year-old monastery buildings and lush gardens, will remain operational under Mandarin Oriental management through November 2025. After the seasonal closure, a comprehensive three-phase renovation will begin, led by London-based design studio Albion Nord. When it reopens, the property will feature 136 redesigned rooms and suites that combine Venetian charm with the brand’s contemporary design sensibility.

“We are delighted to bring Mandarin Oriental’s legendary service to Venice,” said Laurent Kleitman, group chief executive of Mandarin Oriental. “This historic property, with its unique location and rich heritage, aligns perfectly with our vision to craft immersive experiences that allow guests to connect meaningfully with the destination.” The addition strengthens Mandarin Oriental’s growing Italian portfolio, which already includes Milan and Lake Como, and soon Rome, Cortina, and Porto Cervo.

Once reimagined, the resort will offer a wide range of luxury experiences, including four distinctive dining venues and a comprehensive wellness offering. The Spa at Mandarin Oriental will feature treatment rooms, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, multi-sensory showers, and a relaxation lounge, with wellness amenities like a yoga pavilion, an outdoor pool, and paddle and tennis courts rounding out the experience.

The island’s historic charm will extend to its events programming, with expansive indoor and outdoor spaces that can accommodate weddings, celebrations, and corporate functions. A dedicated children’s area is also planned.

The transformation is a partnership with Permak Investment, the property’s owner. “As one of Venice’s most storied private islands, this landmark deserves the legendary service and refined hospitality that Mandarin Oriental is renowned for,” said Emir Uyar, vice president of Permak Investment. “We look forward to welcoming guests to an unparalleled luxury experience in this extraordinary setting.”
