U.S. State Department Reissues Travel Advisories for Four Destinations

The U.S. State Department this week reissued travel advisories for four destinations, including one popular European tourist spot and another in the Caribbean.

All of the advisories are reissues of old advisories with new information, and none of them advise travelers to avoid traveling to the destinations. Instead, they alert travelers to some potential issues that they should be aware of prior to arriving.

Here are the updates:

Bolivia remains at a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory due to civil unrest. In particular, the State Department says, travelers should not travel to the Chapare region due to crime and should reconsider travel to the Yungas region due to crime.

“Demonstrations, strikes, and roadblocks can occur at any time in Bolivia. Demonstrations can result in violence. Roadblocks and strikes may cut off traffic and restrict the flow of goods and services around the country. Domestic and international flights may be delayed or unexpectedly cancelled,” the Bolivia advisory reads.

Denmark remains at a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution level due to terrorism. According to the State Department, “terrorist groups continue plotting possible attacks in the Kingdom of Denmark.” It is warning travelers to be aware of their surroundings when traveling, particularly to tourist destinations, and to follow the instructions of local authorities.

The Dominican Republic also remains at a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution advisory, due to crime. The State Department is advising travelers that some violent crime is a concern throughout the Dominican Republic, though some areas, including the country’s resort areas, are better policed than other urban areas like Santo Domingo.

The State Department is also advising travelers to be aware of their surroundings, to not physically resist any robbery attempt, and to not display signs of wealth in public.

Ecuador remains at a Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution Level due to civil unrest and crime. Just like Bolivia, the State Department is advising travelers against specific areas of Ecuador, alerting them, to reconsider travel to Guayaquil north of Portete de Tarquí Avenue and avoid travel to Carchi, Sucumbíos, and the northern part of Esmeraldas provinces, including Esmeraldas city, along with Guayaquil, south of Portete de Tarquí Avenue, due to crime.

All four advisories join other updates that the State Department has made recently, including an update to its Peru advisory and a Do Not Travel warning for Haiti.

Most of the popular international destinations for U.S. travelers remain in the State Department’s Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution or Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions categories. That includes Japan (Level 1), France (Level 2), Italy (level 2), Germany (Level 2), Spain (Level 2), United Kingdom (Level 2), The Bahamas (Level 2), and Turks and Caicos (Level 2), along with the four destinations that were updated this week.
