Mandarin Oriental Expands into Malaysia’s Desaru Coast with Tropical Beachfront Retreat

Mandarin Oriental Expands into Malaysia’s Desaru Coast with Tropical Beachfront Retreat

Mandarin Oriental is expanding its Southeast Asian footprint with a new beachfront resort in Malaysia’s Desaru Coast, Johor, an up-and-coming luxury destination that’s fast shedding its “hidden gem” status. Set to join the brand’s portfolio this month ahead of a full rebranding in January 2026, Mandarin Oriental, Desaru Coast—previously the One&Only Desaru Coast—will occupy 128 acres of rainforest and beach along the South China Sea.

The destination has seen a deliberate transformation in recent years. Once overlooked in favor of Malaysia’s west coast and island escapes, Desaru has been reimagined through a government-led master development plan anchored by top-tier resorts, championship golf courses, a major waterpark, and a convention center. With its newly completed CIQ ferry terminal offering direct access from Singapore and Indonesia, Desaru Coast is increasingly attractive to international travelers seeking nature, authenticity, and ease of access—just 75 minutes by ferry from Singapore’s Tanah Merah Terminal.

Designed by the late Kerry Hill, the resort is his final completed project and showcases his signature tropical modernism. The 44 villas and suites are all generously sized, many with private gardens and plunge pools overlooking either rainforest or ocean. Five dining venues, including a beach club and lounge bar, bring global-meets-local cuisine to the fore.

Wellness will be a focal point: The Spa at Mandarin Oriental will offer Eastern rituals, yoga, and beauty services, alongside tennis, padel courts, and a thoughtfully designed kids’ club. Event spaces, set against panoramic coastal and jungle backdrops, will cater to both celebrations and intimate gatherings. The resort also provides access to the award-winning Els Club golf courses, designed by Ernie Els and Vijay Singh.

According to Laurent Kleitman, Mandarin Oriental’s group chief executive, the property “represents a significant step in our strategic vision to bring the Group’s legendary service and crafted experiences to new and exceptional locations.”

This announcement comes as Desaru continues its evolution into a high-end enclave rivaling Langkawi. Though still ramping up in name recognition, Desaru boasts strong direct-FIT demand from Malaysia and Singapore, and its natural setting and short-stay appeal position it well for global travelers pairing visits with Singapore.

With plans for 40 branded residences to follow, Mandarin Oriental’s arrival is a signal that Desaru Coast is officially on the luxury map.
