Inside Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort: Where Urban Chic Meets Caribbean Serenity

Some resorts in Mexico tout their endless activities and high-energy nightlife, while others focus on the serenity and healing aspects of nature. The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort seamlessly blends both. Sitting in a prime location in the heart of Playa del Carmen, this luxury resort offers its guests the tranquil shores and turquoise waters of the Caribbean along with the vibrant energy of La Quinta Avenida just steps outside the property. Here, travelers can immerse themselves in both relaxation and adventure.

The resort’s modern architectural design is built around wide-open spaces and natural materials. A stunning, water-infused structure paying homage to the Mayan pyramids greets guests upon arrival. Moving inside the property is a paseo, a large open promenade that connects the entrance of the hotel and passes by outdoor cafes, restaurants, infinity pools, and the Cenote Spa ─ all the way down to the sublime white sand beach.

Complementing the property’s sophisticated architecture is its extensive art collection. More than 200 pieces, created by the renowned Mexican artist César López Negrete, are displayed throughout the resort, enriching the atmosphere with a sense of local cultural depth.

Rooms and Suites

Billed as a family friendly resort, the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort has 314 rooms and suites. Guests can choose from standard rooms with views of the Caribbean Sea or the preserved mangroves; suites offering expanded living spaces and some with swim-up access or private plunge pools; and club rooms providing exclusive access to the Grand Club Lounge.

The decor in my suite was comfortable, minimalist with white hues and glass accents, and a nice balcony facing the ocean. The Presidential Suites on oceanview corners incorporate rich tones, dark wood, marble, hues of grey and cream, and modern decor.

Be sure to inquire about the luxurious Floating Suites. Located on the fifth floor of the property’s iconic bridge, they give the illusion of floating above the crystal-clear Caribbean waters. With stunning sea views, contemporary design, and luxurious amenities, these suites provide an elevated escape. Each suite features a private balcony, a spacious bathroom with a soaking tub, and a serene atmosphere that is perfect for those seeking privacy and elegance in the heart of Playa del Carmen.

Culinary Delights

Dining during our stay was elevated, and the staff takes great care to innovate their culinary offerings. They created two unique and memorable experiences just for us. The first, called a Splash Dinner, was tested on our group of about 20 people, and it was a smashing success. A long table lavishly decorated with flowers and tropical greens was placed in the wading pool, with an ocean view. We were instructed to remove our footwear and step into the pool and then be seated. The multi-course gourmet dinner with wine and mescal pairings, and commentary by the chef and sommelier before each course, was superb. We enjoyed the entire meal with our feet dangling in the refreshing water and the breeze caressing us, which evoked a playful and carefree ambiance that fostered meaningful conversation. The customized event demonstrated how well the staff caters to groups, delivering superb service and making a lasting impression.

Another dining spectacle worth mentioning, the Taste of Mexico, was the farewell dinner set near the entrance of the resort. With the table positioned in front of the towering pyramid structure, the flowing water had been turned off and a dinner show depicting Mayan culture, music, and song was enacted on the pyramid. While the artists enthralled us, one course after another of tantalizing, homestyle Mexican food and drink danced on our palates. At one point, a slight drizzle began, and within minutes, the staff was ready with umbrellas to shield each of us (fortunately, it passed quickly, but it was impressive how they were at the ready to care for their guests supremely). Throughout our stay, the service was notable.

While these two dinners were understandably special occasions, much attention is given to the everyday cuisine at the property’s three restaurants – and a celebration of cultural flavors can be expected during meals. La Cocina is the signature restaurant serving a fusion of international and Mexican cuisines, emphasizing fresh, local ingredients (also where the cooking classes take place). The Grill at 1 26 is an upscale steakhouse offering prime cuts and seafood, complemented by an extensive wine list. And Sushi “n” Raw Bar is popular as the only sushi bar in the area with an ocean view.

All-inclusive packages are available, as well as European plans for those who wish to sample the restaurants in town.

Wellness and Rejuvenation

The resort’s Cenote Spa is spectacular, both in its design and its services. Inspired by the region’s famous cenotes, the dramatic placement of the circular structure on the property raises one’s curiosity. Once inside, the exceptional design and use of natural elements in this tranquil environment immediately inspires relaxation.

At the center is a magnificent cenote-inspired pool with rock walls, wooden floors, and tiny lights above that give the illusion of stars shining. Pathways wind to and around the treatment rooms, changing areas, outdoor lap pool, hydrotherapy area, and welcoming little havens that are perfect for a private moment of relaxation. My massage was on par with those received at some of the best spas around the world. And, we were treated to a wonderful Sound Healing session around the cenote pool, where yoga classes are also held.

Paul Wood, general manager at the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort, says the Cenote Spa is his personal favorite aspect of the resort (and I wholeheartedly agree). “The spa is set in a serene, natural environment, and it’s designed to help guests fully disconnect and rejuvenate. The peaceful surroundings, combined with our hydrotherapy areas, create a truly restorative experience. It’s the perfect place for guests to unwind, escape the everyday, and embrace a sense of calm that stays with them long after their visit.”

In addition, the 24-hour fitness center houses state-of-the-art equipment. There are three infinity pools on the property (one is adults-only) and a beautiful, swimmable beach.  Kayaking, cycling, barre, water aerobics, and salsa dancing are also available.

Activities and Excursions

Guests can participate in various fun and engaging enrichment activities on-site. The tequila and mezcal tastings were an absolute treat, giving us a deeper understanding and a true taste of the local flavors. A Mexican Cocktails Workshop led by the resort’s mixologist teaches how to properly prepare three of the most popular Mexican cocktails (Margarita, Mezcalita, and Paloma). Cooking classes at La Cocina show guests how to whip up traditional Mexican dishes. These experiences not only promote relaxation and well-being, but also provide a deeper connection to the rich culture of the region.

The Tortuguita (“Little Turtle”) Kids Club keeps the little ones ages 4-11 entertained with costumes, toys, table games, classes, and piñatas. Hashtag is for ages 12 and up, with a cinema, arcade, and games. As for the four-legged family members, pets (dogs and cats, maximum of two pets) are welcome.

Beyond the resort, La Quinta Avenida (the Fifth Avenue of Playa del Carmen) is just around the corner. This bustling street is lined with shops, cafes, restaurants, and nightlife venues ranging from laid-back bars to pulsating dance clubs.

Playa del Carmen is also surrounded by incredible natural beauty and cultural sites that are easy to reach from the resort. A must-see is the ancient Mayan ruins of Tulum, where rich history meets breathtaking coastal views. The famous cenotes are natural freshwater pools, a distinctive swimming and snorkeling experience. A visit to the nearby Xcaret or Xel-Há Parks offer a chance to see the region’s vibrant wildlife, underground rivers, and beautiful landscapes. And, the island of Cozumel, just a short ferry ride away, is an excellent destination for snorkeling, diving, and exploring marine life.

Weddings and Business Events

The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen Resort offers impressive venues and services tailored for destination weddings, group gatherings, and business events.

A romantic wedding celebration by the sea is picture-perfect at the Citrus Patio, an open-air terrace enveloped by lush vegetation, accommodating up to 300 guests for ceremonies and cocktail receptions. The Grand Ballroom is a spacious, air-conditioned venue suitable for up to 600 guests, ideal for grand receptions and as a reliable backup in case of inclement weather. The Grill Restaurant Terrace provides for intimate dinners, with seating for up to 80 guests, combining gourmet cuisine with ocean views.

The resort’s dedicated wedding team assists with every detail, from customized decor and floral arrangements to entertainment and spa services, ensuring a seamless and personalized celebration.

For corporate events set in paradise, the Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen provides over 15,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, with rooms that are flooded with natural light and have views of the mangroves or ocean. The Grand Ballroom is a multi-purpose space that can be configured to host large conferences or divided for smaller sessions. Two boardrooms and five breakout rooms are equipped with modern amenities catering to various meeting needs. The pre-function indoor and outdoor spaces are suitable for networking events, coffee breaks, or informal gatherings.

The resort’s event planning team offers comprehensive support, from audiovisual equipment set-up to customized catering options.

The Grand Hyatt Playa del Carmen has a long history of hosting events, and the staff know exactly what to do to ensure that each event is executed flawlessly.
