Norwegian Cruise Line Names Godmother for Norwegian Prima (and She Can Roar)

Get your cherry ChapStick ready, Katy Perry is ready to take the cruise industry by storm. Perry, who is capable of anything, will be taking on the role of godmother to Norwegian Cruise Line’s next new ship, Norwegian Prima. The award-winning pop icon and “American Idol” judge will begin her tenure as godmother when she blesses and officially names the ship at a christening ceremony in Reykjavik, Iceland on August 27, 2022. Afterwards, Perry will perform for attendees.
Perry joins a growing list of music industry stars who have taken on the role for NCL, joining Kelly Clarkson, Elvis Duran, Pitbull, and Reba McIntire.
“We are so excited to welcome Katy Perry, a one-of-a-kind artist and worldwide sensation, as godmother of Norwegian Prima,” said Harry Sommer, president and CEO of NCL. “We are so incredibly proud that she will be part of the Norwegian Cruise Line family and look forward to launching our beautiful, innovative ship with her in August.”
“All of the best trips my family has taken have been on the water,” Perry said at a small event in Las Vegas for travel media. “You wake up in another place, with a new view. Nothing compares. I think it’s the best way to see the world.”
Perry said she’s also excited about the christening because it’s going to be in Iceland, which is a Bucket List trip for her.
“I love that I get to christen her with my good vibrations, and I’m so excited for this new, beautiful, high-end, high-tech ship to take the seas, and provide once-in-a-lifetime vacations for so many families.
An NCL spokesperson said Perry was a natural choice for Prima because of her innovative and inclusive brand, which meshes well with Norwegian Cruise Line’s values as well.
Like the brand’s relationship with former godparents Kelly Clarkson (Norwegian Encore) and Elvis Duran (Norwegian Bliss), which has evolved over time, NCL expects the same of its relationship with Perry. Duran and his “Morning Show” castmates frequently travel on Norwegian ships, taking their fans along for the ride via social media.
Like Perry, Norwegian Prima is an original and will be in a class of its own when it launches August 2022 (at least until Norwegian Viva comes out in June 2023). It will feature a revamped dining program, as well as the line’s most expansive variety of suite categories spanning eight decks, a Donna Summers-inspired musical and a three-level Go Kart racetrack.
Designed to bring passengers closer to the sea, Norwegian Prima will feature an expanded Ocean Boulevard with multiple infinity pools and Oceanwalk glass bridges with unobstructed views of the ocean below.
