American Scrubs Phoenix Flights Due To Heat Wave
by Barbara Peterson /
American Airlines canceled nearly 50 flights Tuesday out of Phoenix due to a heat wave that sent temperatures rising to a scorching 120 degrees. Although hot weather is to be expected at this time of year in the southwestern desert, the National Weather Service said that the last time Phoenix experienced readings that high was more than 20 years ago.
American, which acquired its dominant position at the Arizona hub thanks to its merger with US Airways, said it will reassess the situation on Wednesday; the rest of the region, including Nevada and California, are also feeling the burn.
