New York State Travel Insurance Bill Fails To Come To Vote
Efforts in New York to pass a bill this year to make it easier for travel agents to sell travel insurance have failed.
The office of Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (D-Kingston), sponsor of Assembly bill 7971, confirmed Tuesday that the bill will not come to a vote before this session ends June 16. The New York State Assembly is not scheduled to reconvene until next January.
Forty-two states have passed a similar bill to replace the “crazy-quilt” of state regulations with a single national standard proposed by the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) and the National Conference of Insurance Legislators (NCOIL).
Senate Bill 5363 passed the New York State Senate unanimously on Feb. 29. The American Society of Travel Agents and the US Travel Insurance Association had been working feverishly the past few weeks developing support to move the bill through the Assembly.
