Fam Opens Agents’ Eyes to Alberta’s Appeal in Winter
by Maria Lenhart /Travel agents visiting Alberta’s Rocky Mountain region on a fam trip this past March were surprised to discover that the destination is at its best when snow is on the ground.
Many of the New York-area agents had visited Alberta before, but in summer or fall. The experience this time was different. They tried everything from dog sledding to snow tubing and cross-country skiing, stretching their physical boundaries and mental attitudes about a destination they thought they knew.
“I was amazed to find that it’s even more beautiful in the winter. To look out your window and see those snowcapped mountains is a gorgeous experience. I can’t wait to go back – during the winter,” said Alice Tillem of Hillside Travel in Hicksville, N.Y.
Tillem and her colleagues traveled with Cheryl Kasprzycki, business development director for Travel Alberta, spending several days touring Banff and Lake Louise. Here is their report.
What surprised you about Alberta or stood out as a high point?
“What really surprised me is how much there is to do there during the winter. Every day brought a different adventure. We went dog sledding and sleigh riding. We went to a beautiful hot springs. And the shopping was much more extensive than I imagined. The streets of Banff are lined with really nice galleries and shops. We also enjoyed a microbrewery.” – Ralph Ferriolo, Mt. Carmel Travel, Hamden, Conn.
“I had been to Alberta about 10 years ago on a bus tour during the fall. Going there at the end of March is a whole different experience – it grasps you differently. There was much more to do. I would have no problem recommending Alberta in winter. It’s still beautiful, and the soft adventure possibilities are greater.” – Kathleen Cooney, Ginger Peachy Travel, East Islip, N.Y.
“Banff is a great town where you can walk around to enjoy restaurants, galleries and usual tourist shops. The Banff Park Museum was a wonderful extra and a highlight. The Lake Louise area was breathtaking, even in winter, with walks on the lake, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and sleigh rides. The chance to go dog sledding was the final touch.” – Paulette Aronson, Ovation Travel, New York
“I’m elderly, and I did things I never thought I’d be doing, including cross-country skiing. The instruction was excellent. I also went snow tubing. Anybody can do this. Instead of having to walk up the hill, you just get on a moving sidewalk with your tube. Then you get on it and go down.” – Alice Tillem
What type of clients are best suited for Alberta?
“It’s great for anyone who enjoys winter sports and who is active. I did it all and loved every minute of it. There’s even ice climbing, if you’re really adventurous.” – Ralph Ferriolo
“At one time I thought it was just for young families who want to ski. Now I know Alberta can be enjoyed by anyone of any age. I would sell it to everyone.” – Alice Tillem
“The soft adventure is great for families, but I would recommend Alberta to anybody of any age. Anyone would enjoy the sightseeing, the Canadian history. Unfortunately, Alberta is not on the radar screens of most agents. But it’s a great place to sell. I’m recommending it a lot now.” – Kathleen Cooney
Alberta is often positioned as a family destination. Would you agree?
“Every one of the activities is catered to members of the whole family, not just the adults. Even at the top of the mountain, there are ski slopes geared for beginners, as well as intermediate and expert skiers. I’ve never seen this before in other ski areas – gentle trails even at the top. There are a lot of ski school programs for kids.” – Ralph Ferriolo
Is there much to do besides outdoor activities?
“Alberta is still a great destination even if you’re not terribly active. You can go dog sledding and sleigh riding. We went to a beautiful hot springs. The shopping was more extensive than I thought. The streets of Banff are lined with really nice shops.” – Ralph Ferriolo
How would you rate the local infrastructure?
“We stayed at the Fairmont hotels in Banff and Lake Louise, which are destinations in themselves. The food was excellent.” – Alice Tillem
“The facilities, the hotels and restaurants were phenomenal. The restaurants were abundant and served delicious food. The locals were super friendly, and the people who handled the activities were outstanding. Our hosts went above and beyond to accommodate us. The Fairmont hotels are nothing short of spectacular.” – Ralph Ferriolo
“The local tour operators, the people who run the ski resorts are all very professional and welcoming. We don’t often think of Alberta as a great ski destination, but it is.” – Kathleen Cooney
