Wristbands Will Track Unaccompanied Minors
In an airline industry first, children traveling alone on Air New Zealand now will be offered chip-embedded wristbands that send text notifications to five contacts along the way.
The Airband is being offered free to children between the ages of 5 and 16 until Feb. 3. After that it will cost $15 per child for domestic flights and $40 for international ones.
The airline is following the lead of other travel-industry players. The biggest debut of this sort of technology came from Disney and its $1 billion Magic Bands project two years ago. Then earlier this month, Royal Caribbean began replacing room keycards with multipurpose wristbands that track of bar, restaurant, and photo tabs.
