WestJet and the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) have agreed to return to the bargaining table, preventing further flight cancellations from disrupting summer travel plans.

AMFA represents WestJet Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AME) and other Tech Ops employees. The union issued a 72-hour strike notice on Monday, June 17 after the airline backed out of negotiations scheduled for June 19 and 20.

In response, WestJet canceled 40 flights ahead of the strike, impacting approximately 6,500 guests. According to a statement, the airline’s cancellations were necessary “to park aircraft in a safe and organized manner” before labor action went into effect.

AMFA has withdrawn its strike notice, and both parties are returning to the bargaining table.

“We recognize the impact the initial cancellations had on our guests and our people, and we sincerely appreciate their patience and understanding during this time,” said Diederik Pen, President of WestJet Airlines and Group Chief Operating Officer. “In returning to the bargaining table, we are committed to finding a resolution to avoid further disruption to our operations.”

Today (June 20), WestJet appeared before the Canadian Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) to discuss the airline’s request for arbitration. The CIRB stated that the board requires more time to consider detailed submissions from both parties before it can make a decision.
