A van jumped the sidewalk in Barcelona’s Las Ramblas district Thursday, killing 13 people and injuring more than 50 in a terrorist attack, Spanish police said.

The president of Spain’s Catalonia region Carles Puigdemont confirmed in a news conference that two people have been arrested in connection with the attack. He also gave an updated number of those injured, saying 80 people have been hospitalized, with 15 in serious condition.

The incident occurred along the city’s central boulevard that runs from Catalonia Square to the Christopher Columbus monument.

The Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but provided no evidence or details.

The area is currently under lockdown; stores and nearby Metro and train stations have been ordered to close. Authorities have urged people to stay away from the area around the city’s Plaça Catalunya (Catalonia Square).

The U.S. State Department issued an emergency message asking Americans in Barcelona to let their families and friends know they are safe.

#USCitizens in #Barcelona are urged to avoid the area and to follow local media and other information sources for additional guidance.
