WestJet Hailstorm Aftermath: More Cancellations, Canadian North & Encore Offer Support
by Sarah Milner /WestJet has cancelled more flights following last week’s severe hailstorm that grounded 10% of the airline’s fleet. As the team works to repair WestJet’s 16 damaged aircraft, WestJet Encore and Canadian North are helping cover the service gap.
In a service update on Aug. 12, WestJet stated it was operating additional sections to accommodate guests whose travel plans had been disrupted. This included 37 sections by WestJet Encore, one additional section by WestJet’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, and 14 sections by interline partner Canadian North.
WestJet has cancelled over 600 flights since the storm through to tomorrow (Aug. 14). The airline has advised guests to check the status of their flights before heading to the airport.
WestJet announced its partnership with Canadian North on Aug. 9, along with images of the hail damage.
“As a result of the significant impact to WestJet’s fleet, cancellations continue to be implemented across the airline’s network to account for decreased capacity,” the airline wrote in a statement. “Teams continue working to perform necessary repairs and inspections to the 16 aircraft damaged by the hailstorm that impacted Calgary on the evening of August 5, 2024.”
