InsureMyTrip Research, with data from The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS), has revealed which of the busiest airports in the U.S. are prone to the most flight cancellations.

Severe weather was to blame for most cancellation blocks in 2018, according to InsureMyTrip. Hurricane Florence, Hurricane Michael, and Winter Storm Grayson forced groundings at many Eastern U.S. airports and residual delays nationwide.

New York’s LaGuardia reported the highest percentage of canceled flights, for the second year in a row. Winter Storm Grayson was a contributing factor in 2018, forcing the airport to temporarily shut down.

The airport with the least amount of cancellations was Salt Lake City International in Utah, maintaining a consistent reputation for punctuality.

Here is the ranking of the ten U.S. airports with the highest percentage of flights canceled in 2018:

InsureMyTrip said it expects the grounding of Boeing Max 737 aircraft will result in a higher number of reported flight delays and cancellations for hub airports this year.

The Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS) tracks the on-time performance of domestic flights operated by large air carriers. Rankings were based on the flight cancellation rate per airport. Airports on the list also reported 18,500 or more scheduled flights for 2018.
