Hurricane Erin Update: Storm Continues Northwest Path, Impacts Cruise Lines

Hurricane Erin, the first major storm of the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, is continuing its path through the Caribbean on Tuesday morning. The storm is growing in size and strength as it moves through the western Atlantic.

As of 5 a.m. Tuesday, Erin was located southeast of the Bahamas and north of Cuba, moving northwest at 7 mph. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said the storm should pick up speed today before turning northward on Wednesday, continuing on that track into Thursday. On this path, the storm is expected to pass to the east of the Bahamas on Tuesday night and then move over the eastern Atlantic, along the U.S. East Coast, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Erin is expected to bring heavy rainfall to the Turks and Caicos on Tuesday, and then to the Bahamas on Tuesday night. While the storm does not pose a large threat to U.S. travel, as it continues to grow in size, it is likely to cause some coastal flooding in the North Carolina Outer Banks, and other areas along the U.S. East Coast, Bermuda, and Atlantic Canada.

Cruise Ship Changes

Air travel has been relatively unaffected by Erin compared to other storms. However, the cruise industry has been hit as lines continue to try to keep their ships out of Erin’s path. Here are the latest changes as of Tuesday morning:

  • Disney Treasure is skipping its original Eastern Caribbean calls in Tortola and St. Thomas on its Aug. 16 sailing, instead heading to Cozumel, George Town, and Falmouth.
  • Carnival Sunshine canceled a Bermuda call on Aug. 20-21, opting instead for Celebration Key and Nassau.
  • Carnival Vista visited Nassau, The Bahamas on Aug. 19 instead of Half Moon Cay.
  • Carnival’s Mardi Gras pushed its visit to Grand Turk from Aug. 18 to Aug. 19.
  • Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas was also announced as skipping Bermuda last week, opting to visit Port Canaveral before returning to Baltimore on Aug. 14.
  • Royal Caribbean’s Freedom of the Seas is skipping its Aug. 17 call in Nassau to return to Miami early on Aug. 18.
  • Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas swapped out its two-day Bermuda visit for an overnight visit to Halifax.
  • NCL’s Norwegian Aqua is also skipping its planned visit to Bermuda and heading north to Saint John, New Brunswick for a port call on Aug. 20.
  • MSC Cruises’ MSC World America’s planned port calls to Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic on Aug. 18 and San Juan on Aug. 18 have been replaced with calls to Costa Maya on Aug. 19 and Cozumel on Aug. 20.
  • Celebrity Beyond will skip its call to Perfect Day at CocoCay planned for Aug. 19 and will spend the day at sea.
