Just ahead of the summer travel season, Puerto Rico is dropping a number of COVID-19 protocols and restrictions, making it easier for fully vaccinated tourists to enter, and enjoy the island.

According to a new Executive Order, starting today, any U.S. traveler who is fully vaccinated can no longer has to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 PCR test before entering the island. Instead, vaccinated tourists can now simply upload their COVID-19 vaccination card through Discover Puerto Ricos’ online portal.

Once vaccination info is uploaded and certified, visitors will get a QR code that will allow them to leave the airport.

International travelers, and those who are not vaccinated, will still have to produce a negative COVID-19 test taken within 72 hours of arrival. Only then will the quarantine be lifted. If a test result comes in late, travelers can still enter Puerto Rico, however, they will automatically be fined $300 until results are uploaded.

The island is allowing allow those who are not yet vaccinated and are flying into the Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), to receive a Johnson and Johnson vaccine in Terminal B.

Also starting this week, Puerto Rico is upping its capacity restrictions on local businesses from 30% to 50%, along with removing the mask mandate for fully vaccinated people in parks and on beaches. Those spending time in pools and beaches will also now be able to consume alcohol without restrictions.

According to Discover Puerto Rico CEO Brad Dean, the island’s major focus during the pandemic was the health and safety of its residents and now begins the process of welcoming back tourists.

“Puerto Rico has prioritized health and safety from the onset of the pandemic, becoming the first U.S. destination to implement an Island-wide curfew, among other measures developed to safeguard residents and visitors,” he said.

“As restrictions loosen, we look forward to welcoming travelers seeking to responsibly explore our Island, immerse themselves in unforgettable culture, unique natural wonders and delicious cuisine, while taking advantage of the ease of travel that comes with Puerto Rico being a U.S. territory, including no need for a passport for U.S. citizens.”
