Eco & Beaches
Bordered to the west by Lake Okeechobee, the south by The Everglades and the East by the Atlantic Ocean, The Palm Beaches and Boca Raton is surrounded by Florida’s diverse liquid assets – ideal for water activities and warm-weather recreation. As the gateway of The Everglades, the area invites adventurous travelers to explore the legendary mangrove-lined waterways and grasslands of this natural American treasure. Rich with exotic wildlife, natural treasures, and recreational activities, The Palm Beaches is an ideal location to explore Florida’s natural wonders. From hiking and biking to paddling and riding, the area offers an activity for any age or skill level.
Starting in the northernmost part of The Palm Beaches is Riverbend Park with a variety of options for exploring the Loxahatchee River – a federally designated wild and scenic river. The park even offers a guided full-moon bike tour that lets visitors explore the estuaries and wildlife in the dark before breaking for dinner around a warm bonfire.
At the south end of the destination is Lake Okeechobee, the second largest freshwater lake in the United States, and known to many as the nation’s best spots for Bass fishing. Rich with exotic wildlife and a multitude of recreational activities, the Lake Region offers an experience unlike any other. A hike along the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail encompasses the 110-mile circumference of the lake and offers spectacular views of natural wonders and beauty. In addition, a number of local parks offer a variety of amenities and activities, including the Duncan Padgett Park, John Stretch Park, Pahokee State Recreation Area, Paul Rardin Park, Reverend Leon Camel Jr. Park, and the new Pioneer Park Aquatic Center at Glades Pioneer Park. With binoculars in hand, you’re sure to spot wintering buntings, grosbeaks and orioles during a trip to the western end of Lake Road at the Belle Glade campground on Torry Island. The extensive network of levees and canals in this area afford ample opportunities for bird watching.
For natural experiences in a more attraction-like setting, you’ll want to visit the Busch Wildlife Sanctuary, Lion Country Safari, Palm Beach Zoo, and Loggerhead Marinelife Center.
And, of course, there are The Palm Beaches – 47 stunning miles of sun, surf and sand considered some of the best in the world for a number of activities, on shore and out at sea. An average temperature of 78 degrees and 285 days of sunshine per year mean that kayaking, fishing, and a wide range of maritime experiences can be enjoyed year-round. Additionally, the destination’s close proximity to the Gulf Stream maintains comfortable ocean temperatures for divers and snorkelers to explore the 20-plus reefs and abundance of deep-water wrecks. Vast and elaborate parks also offer everything from hiking and biking to turtle walks.
