Freedom To Travel To Cuba Act Gains A Sponsor In Congress
by Cheryl RosenU.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA) is co-sponsoring the Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act, which would allow Americans unrestricted travel to the island for the first time in 50 years, WFMZ.com reported last night.
“The United States does not prevent Americans from travelling to any other country in the world, including countries governed by repressive regimes and with horrific human rights records, like Iran and North Korea,” Sen. Casey said in a statement. “I believe that people-to-people engagement is one of the best ways to build ties and promote U.S. interests.”
The bill was originally introduced by Arizona Senator Jeff Flake in 2015.
As of now, Americans can only go to Cuba for educational and cultural purposes. But the barriers to entry have fallen quickly in recent weeks, allowing individual travelers rather than just groups, and welcoming Cuban-Americans, who were previously barred from returning by the Cuban government.
