The Eastern Cape is a place of rugged beauty. Its pristine coastline, virgin bush and sub-tropical forests exist as though untouched by time. Stretching from the snow-capped peaks of the southern Drakensberg to the lush forests of Tsitsikamma and flanked by the Indian Ocean, it’s not surprising it is described as a province of great extremes. Its natural diversity is second to none: the Eastern Cape incorporates parts of all 7 ecological zones that occur in South Africa and features all 3 of the country’s biodiversity regions. This heralds a colorful assortment of fauna and flora, including Africa’s Big Five; an abundance of birdlife; and a rich and varied marine life, including 27 species of whales and dolphins.
The Wild Coast is an unspoiled natural treasure and stretches along the Eastern Cape coastline. This strip of coastline, which reaches from the Mtamvuna River in the north to the Great Kei River in the south, is an untamed wilderness. It offers incredible views of the dramatic coastline, jagged cliffs, sheltered bays, wild beaches and rolling hills and valleys.
The Transkei, a former homeland, forms part of the Eastern Cape Wild Coast and is a hikers’ paradise and can be enjoyed on horseback. It is renowned for being one of the most beautiful places on the planet. Ancient forests filled with cycads and yellowwood trees abound with bird and animal life. Bird watchers can go in search of the approximately 320 species that make this area their home.
