A day after severe thunderstorms wreaked havoc at New York City area airports, cancellations and delays continue into Thursday morning.

According to FlightAware, here is the situation at New York airports as of 9:15 a.m. EST on Thursday:

  • LaGuardia Airport (LGA): 6% of all departures and 5% of all arrivals canceled. Canceled flights leaving from LaGuardia now number 36, and delays are piling up, too, with 6% of departures and another 6% of arrivals delayed.
  • Newark Liberty International (EWR): 2% of departures and 5% of arrivals are canceled, along with 4% of departures delayed and 8% of arrivals.
  • John F. Kennedy International (JFK): JFK is performing better than LaGuardia, with just 1% of departures and arrivals canceled.

All-in-all, air traffic around the New York area is recovering after Wednesday’s disaster that saw massive delays and cancellations across all three airports. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued ground delays, and then ground stops, for all three airports, shutting down air traffic as severe thunderstorms moved through the area.

According to FlightAware, close to 30% of departures and arrivals at all three of those hubs were delayed and another 150 departures were canceled.

Many major airlines issued change fee and fare difference waivers for travel through those airports on Wednesday. All of those waivers ended on Wednesday night.
