Charles Gatt Jr., Trade Publisher and TWA Executive, Dies
Charles Gatt Jr., the co-founder of Travel World News and a travel industry veteran, died last week at 81. Gatt was born in Malta in 1934. He served in both the Royal Canadian Air Force and United States Air Force before starting his career in travel. He got his start in the business in 1962 with TWA as director of IATA Affairs and, from there moved on to chair the Jet Air Transport Exchange from 1972 to 1988. During that time, Gatt co-founded JAX FAX, a central clearinghouse for airline charter operators to connect with travel professionals. JAX FAX was one of the first trades to use electronic exchanges to communicate with travel professionals. In 1988, Gatt co-founded Travel World News where he worked as owner and publisher for 27 years before his death.
