Why More Independent Travel Advisors Are Turning to Host Agency Support Models

Independence has long been a defining goal for travel advisors. Now the trend is to redefine what that independence actually looks like. Rather than building businesses entirely on their own, a growing number of advisors are choosing to align with host-supported models that allow them to retain control while tapping into established infrastructure.

The appeal is clear: access to preferred supplier relationships, streamlined back-office systems, and commission structures designed to maximize earnings—all without the overhead of going it alone. For advisors focused on growth, this hybrid approach is quickly becoming the new standard.

Here are the main reasons why more travel advisors are turning to host-supported independence.

1. Get Up-and-Running Fast

With infrastructure and resources already in place from their host, advisors can grow their businesses more quickly without needing to build everything on their own from square one.

Mike Plumton, chief joy architect and founder, Happy Factory, explains why he decided to go with a host: “When I founded Happy Factory, the intention was always to build something deeply personal and experience driven. The idea of recreating the infrastructure of a large agency from scratch felt overwhelming, and honestly not where I wanted to spend my time.

“I didn’t have the industry connections at the beginning, and I knew that building all of that would take me away from what I actually cared about. I wanted to focus on connecting with my guests, understanding what brings them joy, and designing meaningful travel experiences around that.

“Working with a host agency gave me that foundation from day one. It provided supplier access, credibility, and operational support, without taking away the independence to build my business in a way that feels authentic to me. It also gave me access to commission levels and promotions that would be very difficult to reach as a single advisor. I was like a VIP without having to do all of the work: sign me up!”

Kira Gartner, owner and founder, Blue Sky Destinations, had a similar experience: “When I first became a travel advisor, I had no experience in the travel industry. As I was building my business, it made so much sense for me to partner with a host agency to take advantage of the training and support that they could offer me. I have now been a travel advisor for 18 years, and I have never been tempted to change that approach. I continue to feel supported and empowered by my host in so many ways!”

2. Offload Admin to Back-Office Support

Back-office support provided by the host agency allows advisors to offload administrative tasks like invoicing, accounting, and documentation—so they can focus more on selling and client relationships.

“My host takes care of my back-office accounting, such as commission matching and preparing my tax documents. This frees up my time to work on marketing, sales, and serving my clients,” says Gartner.

3. Be More Efficient With Technology Tools

Access to advanced technology tools streamline booking, itinerary building, and client management—making day-to-day operations more efficient for travel advisors.

“The technology tools give me consistency and confidence,” explains Plumton. “I know bookings are being handled properly, payments are tracked, and I have visibility into my business without building those systems myself.

“What’s exciting is how quickly technology in the travel space is evolving. My host agency is investing in more advanced CRMs and AI-based tools that will further streamline the work and make everything more efficient. The agencies that continue to invest in making advisors’ lives easier are the ones people will want to be part of.

“Tech can be a tricky taxing factor, even for the most up-to-date techies out there, and making it doable is essential for the rest of us.”

4. Secure Higher Commissions

Being part of a host group provides access to higher commission levels, helping advisors increase their overall profitability.

“Access to preferred supplier programs and higher commission tiers is a major factor [in choosing to go with a host agency]. That level of leverage is very difficult to build and maintain on your own. Without it, I’d have to either focus solely on one partner or earn significantly less for the same work,” reports Plumton.

“Having access to 15% and 16% commissions across a wide range of partners allows me to recommend the right experience for my guests without being influenced by commission structures. It keeps the focus where it should be.”

5. Offer Better Pricing & Amenities Through Preferred Suppliers

Established supplier partnerships built by the host give advisors access to better pricing, added amenities, and exclusive offers for their clients.

Plumton says that “preferred supplier relationships are critical. It’s about access, advocacy, and experience. I’m able to work across a wide range of cruise lines, Disney, and Universal, rather than being limited to just one or two partners. That allows me to deliver more, whether that’s added amenities, better pricing, or stronger support when something needs to be resolved.

“Even when a supplier doesn’t know me personally, being aligned with a host agency often means I’m taken more seriously from the start.

“I also have access to programs like Distinctive Voyages, which enhance the guest experience in meaningful ways. Those are very difficult to replicate independently. It’s all about having access to these partners and programs to make a small business thrive in a big way.”

6. Leverage Training Opportunities

Ongoing training programs provided by a host agency help advisors stay current on destinations, products, and sales strategies to grow their expertise.

Gartner explains the benefits: “I am a better educated advisor due to my relationship with my host. There are numerous free training opportunities I can take advantage of every week, as well as larger events that happen every few months.

“I have so many opportunities to build relationships with suppliers: through webinars, in-person at events, or through reaching out to my BDMs directly. That has allowed me to be a much better resource for my clients.”

7. Gain the Freedom to Focus Your Business

Travel advisors are sometimes hesitant to give up full control of their business in exchange for host support.

To this concern, Plumton advises: “I’d reframe this: You’re not giving up control, you’re gaining the freedom to focus on your actual business. For me, the most important things to control are the guest experience, my brand, and the types of travel I specialize in. That hasn’t changed. I still have my own voice, my own website, my own priorities, and my own angle. What I’ve chosen not to control are the parts of the business that don’t need to be reinvented.”

8. Scale Your Business With Confidence

Perhaps the most comprehensive benefit of the host-supported model is how it can assist advisors in scaling their businesses without adding significant overhead.

“Because the infrastructure is already in place, I don’t need to hire for accounting, technology, or supplier management. I can focus on growing revenue and deepening relationships without taking on the fixed costs. I can scale with intent: there’s no limit to how big I can grow,” describes Plumton.

“And during slower periods, there’s a level of stability there. I’m not worried about everything falling apart, because I’m not carrying all of that overhead myself.”

9. Always Someone to Turn To

A host’s dedicated support teams provide guidance, problem-solving, and resources that help advisors navigate challenges with confidence.

“If I have questions or concerns, I have a whole team of experts I can reach out to for help,” says Gartner. “This includes the staff and executives at my host agency, but also the network of travel advisors I have met through my agency who I connect with regularly.

“I treasure the empowering community that my host has built. This is a bit intangible, but it is a source of power that I draw on every day. I never feel concerned about asking a question or asking for support, and I never feel alone. This is an exciting but challenging business, and I feel confident stepping outside of my comfort zone because I know that I have a powerful team on my side!”

10. An Unexpected Bonus

That sense of community within a host network can also lead to unexpected bonuses in support of individual travel advisors and their broader dreams.

Plumton recounts the beyond-the-daily-travel-business support that he received: “Being part of a host network has also given me the space and support to build something beyond my own business. I co-founded Travel With Pride, an advisor-led community focused on creating a more inclusive travel industry for LGBTQ+ guests and allies. This work is supported from my host agency and strengthened through supplier relationships, which expands the impact of what we’re building.

“My host agency supports us through supplier engagement, training, events, and creating space for industry dialogue. They want us to succeed, and also be happy in what we’re doing.

“For me, the host relationship isn’t just about efficiency or access to tools. It’s about being part of a network that enables growth, connection, and impact while still maintaining full independence…while someone else handles the baggage.”

The Future for Travel Advisors Is Independence—With Support
Host-supported models are redefining what it means to run a successful travel business—providing the flexibility for advisors to grow on their own terms, with the backing needed to compete at a higher level. As more advisors embrace this approach, it’s clear that the future of the industry may lie squarely in combining independence with the right kind of support.
