Why the Future of Travel Belongs to Travel Advisors, Not Algorithms
For more than two decades, technology has promised it will replace travel advisors. First it was online booking engines, then mobile apps, and now AI capable of building itineraries in seconds and answering travel questions instantly. Each wave has sparked the same prediction: that human advisors would become obsolete.
Yet the opposite has happened. As travel grows more complex, emotional, and disrupted, travelers are rediscovering the value of a dedicated travel advisor’s expertise and human judgment. Algorithms can generate options. AI can summarize reviews. But neither can truly understand a traveler’s unspoken priorities, anticipate personal moments, or step in with calm authority when plans go awry. Only a travel advisor can do that.
AI Can’t Replicate This
Lorryn Langton, owner and travel designer, Pink Pineapple Travel, explains more about what travel advisors do for their clients that AI simply can’t replicate: “Despite the consumer’s ability to craft an itinerary using AI tools, the travel professional often delivers professional expertise in the form of updated and current policies in the destination or geographic area, personal experiences to enhance their travels such as tried-and-true restaurant tips, great photography spots, and connections with locals, and above of all, care and passion for seamless and successful travels.
“Experienced travel advisors have superb relationships with tour operators, resorts, and destination management companies to help resolve a concern while traveling or come to the rescue should they need additional support such as a change of room, a medical emergency, or simply ensuring the client’s milestone anniversary is well-celebrated! Travel advisors also can enhance the client experience with their personal stories, photos, and sentiments about the destination that excite the client for their travels.”
Although AI is a smart and efficient tool for advisors to utilize, on its own, it certainly lacks the more subtle aspects of personal connection. As Maddie Dowdall, assistant manager and travel advisor, Sandpiper Vacations, says: “Travel advisors bring an authentic, personalized touch to every itinerary, intentionally creating meaningful moments along the way…Technology can provide information, but it cannot build relationships or truly get to know you. Travel advisors take the time to understand who you are, what you love, and what matters most to you, so every trip feels personal, intentional, and designed just for you.”
When Personal Relationships Outshine Tech
The bonding elements of human-to-human relationships still outshine tech when it comes to travel. And nothing brings home a point better than a few real-life examples.
Shirley Lin, vacation advisor, Adelman Travel, describes a time when her relationship with a client made the difference in a way that no algorithm ever could. She saw a friend’s post on Facebook about traveling to Europe, where the friend shared an itinerary that ChatGPT created, and she asked if the trip was reasonable. Every person who responded gave her an emphatic ‘no.’
ChatGPT did what it was told, with the information that she had input into the system. The problem was she was trying to visit six countries in ten days, and the itinerary had her staying in each city mostly for one-night stays and with a few two-night stays. But it did not mention how she was to get from city to city or even from country to country.
“I know personally that she has never traveled to Europe,” explains Lin. “She has no clue how to navigate a train system. We come from rural Missouri and the furthest that she has traveled is Mexico and the Caribbean. This itinerary took her from Rome, Amalfi Cost, Switzerland, Paris, Brussels, and finally to Amsterdam in ten days. I personally texted her and told her what ChatGPT was proposing was not feasible. I asked her to trust me and trust our relationship, that I would guide her to the best itinerary for her needs.
“This was a special 25th wedding anniversary trip and the client was willing to spend a decent amount. We sat down and talked this out and now she understands about the train system in Europe. She understands about standing hours in line for an excursion if they are not pre-booked with a skip-the-line ticket. We talked about getting around when the signs are in a foreign language. We talked about certain sites and when they were even open during the week. We talked about walking around in the cities when you cannot get GPS location because of the way the cities were built centuries ago.
“Those were the situations I was able to educate her about that she could not get from an algorithm. I was able to show her the ‘real world’ of travel that she would encounter on what was suggested by the ChatGPT trip, where AI was not able to make that distinction. I hope to be able to provide her a deeply personalized experience that she will remember.”
Humans Want Help From Humans During Travel Disruptions
It’s inevitable, sometimes unexpected things happen that disrupt even the best-laid travel plans. During a crisis, however big or small, humans want help from other humans, not from AI-powered services.
“AI-based customer service and online booking platforms are reactive. They respond once a cancellation is triggered or when a traveler reaches out,” says Dowdall. “A travel advisor is actively monitoring situations before they escalate. Whether it is weather patterns, airline schedule changes, supplier updates, or political unrest, I am watching how those events may impact my clients specifically. More importantly, I know my clients. I understand their comfort levels, their flexibility, their budgets, and what this trip means to them.
“In a disruption scenario, I am not just rebooking flights. I am protecting an anniversary, a family reunion, a once-in-a-lifetime vacation. During disruptions, travelers often sit on hold with airlines or try to navigate chat bots. My role is to take that burden off them. I am the one calling the airline, contacting the resort, adjusting transfers, and confirming new arrangements while they focus on their families. Technology can process transactions. A travel advisor provides strategy, advocacy, and emotional reassurance. In stressful situations, having someone who already knows your itinerary and is personally invested in the outcome makes all the difference.”
Dowdall goes on to recount how, in January of this year, she had clients scheduled to depart the same day a major snowstorm was expected to hit the East Coast. “Because I personally monitor my clients’ travel plans, I was already watching the forecast closely. A few days before their departure, I called them and said, ‘Listen, the storm will hit the day you’re supposed to leave. Would you be open to departing a day earlier to make sure you don’t miss your trip?’ While they were figuring out logistics on their end, I was already on the phone with the airline and the resort to confirm availability and understand what changes could be made quickly. By the time they called me back, I had solutions ready. I seamlessly moved their flights and adjusted their resort stay.
“Instead of being snowed in and missing their long-planned week in the sunshine, they arrived early and started their vacation stress-free. An algorithm wouldn’t have been watching the weather for them. It wouldn’t have picked up the phone proactively. It wouldn’t have advocated in real time. That’s where a personal relationship makes all the difference.”
In another example from Lin, she talks about the uprising of drug cartel violence in Puerto Vallarta at the end of February that impacted locals and some visitors. “I had many clients traveling to Cancun who were upset by what they were seeing. They just needed someone to talk to, immediately, who could tell them Puerto Vallarta is 1,500 miles away, roughly a 29-hour drive. I was able to show them that the photos that they were sending me were AI generated. I acknowledged their concerns. I did not downplay the situation. I did assure them that, as their agent, we are in contact with our travel partners, even partners who live and work in Cancun, who can tell us daily or even hourly if needed, of what is going on in Cancun. Booking platforms and AI-based customer service lines cannot hear the fear in their voices or texts. Empathy and providing advocacy and assurance for our clients are essential in times of crisis.”
Balancing the Personal and Tech Touches
At this point in the evolution of AI use in travel, just about everyone would agree that travel advisors need both the human touch and the advantages of advanced technology to thrive.
“As the travel industry moves more fully into an AI-powered phase, the most successful advisors will be those who know how to blend technology with humanity,” advises Dowdall. “On the technological side, advisors will need to be adaptable. AI can be an incredible tool for research efficiency, data analysis, and streamlining processes. Advisors who embrace technology rather than resist it will save time, increase accuracy, and respond more quickly to clients.
“The ability to leverage AI for support while still maintaining oversight and discernment will be key. But the defining factor will always be human skills. Emotional intelligence, relationship building, and critical thinking will set top advisors apart. AI can generate options. It cannot read hesitation in a client’s voice. It cannot sense when a client is overwhelmed. It cannot understand the deeper meaning behind a honeymoon, a milestone birthday, or a long-awaited family reunion.”
Advisors Still Travel’s Most Powerful Advantage
The question is no longer whether technology will change travel. It already has, and the ripple effect of AI has only just begun. But it will not replace the relationship-driven, experience-centered work of travel advisors. No one knows for sure what the future will hold, but we predict that advisors will still be travel’s most powerful advantage and advocate for many years to come.
