Another Lufthansa Strike Will Impact Travel on Thursday

Another German travel strike is going to impact travel through some major airports this week.

Security personnel at airports in Berlin (BER), Hamburg (HAM), Cologne (CGN), Stuttgart (STR), and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden (FKB) will strike on Thursday, March 14th, forcing cancellations of flights at those hubs.

According to Lufthansa, the strike will prevent travelers from accessing the departure gates at those airports. The airline is telling all those with tickets to not come to the airport and is rebooking them on different flights.

“Guests whose booking has already been processed will receive information about the cancellation of their flight and, of course, rebooking options individually via email or in the Lufthansa app. We apologize for the inconvenience caused,” Lufthansa said on Wednesday.

Eurowings, the largest German airline not named Lufthansa, is alerting its guests to check their flight status before going to the airport ton Thursday as “flight operations are expected to be disrupted and flights canceled.”

Verdi, the union representing those workers, said that it hopes to increase “pressure on employers in the industry to finally present a significantly improved, agreeable offer before the next round of negotiations” with the strike.

Travel disruptions from Verdi strikes have been a common thing so far in 2024. Thursday’s strike comes the day after a Lufthansa cabin crew strike ends on Wednesday and a week after Lufthansa ground staff completed a two-day strike last Thursday and Friday. Last week’s strike affected about 200,000 passengers across 1,000 flights per day.
