U.S. and Cuba Reopen Embassies
The U.S. and Cuba have formally announced the renewal of diplomatic relations, which includes the opening of embassies in each other’s capitals for the first time in 50 years. President Obama made the announcement from the White House this morning.
Obama met with Cuban leader Raul Castro in April during a summit in Panama, and the U.S. officially removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terror in June. The opening of embassies in each other’s capital is the final step in re-establishing the relationship between the two countries.
In the statement from the White House, the President said: “The progress we make today is another demonstration we don't have to be imprisoned by the past.”
