Thailand In Mourning Over King’s Death, But Operating As Normal

October 14, 2016

Following the death of Thailand’s beloved king, the government is encouraging the public to carry on as normal–meaning travelers shouldn’t worry about upcoming travel plans.

All airports, public transportation, banks, hospitals and other public services are operating as usual. Business operations, including hotels and resorts, are expected to remain open as normal. However, the Thai cabinet is also asking the public not to hold any “entertainment activities” for a month, according to an announcement on state TV. This may lead to hotels canceling in-house entertainment and live music as the country observes the 30-day mourning period.

Funeral processions were underway Friday for King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who sat on the throne for 70 years.
