Thursday’s snowstorm in Toronto, which dumped more than 7 inches of snow on the area surrounding Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), continues to cause significant delays and cancellations at Canada’s busiest hub.
According to FlightAware, both departures and arrivals at Pearson remain impacted by the aftermath of the storm. As of 7:30 a.m. local time on Friday, nearly 70 inbound flights and approximately 25 departures have been canceled.
“We’re expecting 127,129 travelers to move through the terminals today, with about 40 percent flying through Terminal 1,” the airport stated in a social media update early Friday morning.
“Our crews were out on the airfield throughout yesterday’s snowstorm, clearing snow from runways, taxiways, and aprons. They’re already gearing up for the next round of snowfall, with another few centimeters possible tonight,” the statement added. “Travelers flying today are advised to check their flight status with their airline, as some flights may continue to be impacted by yesterday’s snowfall.”
The majority of the disruptions are affecting Air Canada, which has extended a travel waiver not only for Pearson but also for Montréal-Trudeau (YUL), Ottawa (YOW), Québec City (YQB), St. John’s (YYT), and Billy Bishop (YTZ), Toronto’s secondary major airport.
More than half of all flights scheduled through Toronto were affected by Thursday’s storm. According to FlightAware, Toronto Pearson saw 188 departures canceled and another 260 delayed.
Montréal-Trudeau did not fare much better, with 25 canceled departures and 144 delays. Ottawa (YOW), Vancouver (YVR), and Calgary (YYC) all reported higher-than-normal disruption levels, while Air Canada canceled its entire schedule at Billy Bishop.
