Travelers flying through the U.S. starting on Friday are going to have to pack even more patience than usual. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced Wednesday that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) would be cutting 10% of flights at 40 of the nation’s busiest airports starting on Friday to maintain safety during the ongoing government shutdown.
On Thursday, the FAA revealed the 40 airports that will experience the flight reductions. The cuts will roll out over the next few days, projected to be 4% on Friday and Saturday, 5% on Sunday, and then eventually reach 10% of the total flight schedules next week.
Most of the reductions are expected to target shorter or regional flights. Flights between major cities or hubs will most likely stay on track, but those going to secondary markets that serve fewer travelers are more likely to be cut. The ultimate goal is to reduce the number of flights for air traffic controllers to manage, helping to keep the skies safe amid staffing shortages.
Airlines, including Delta and United, are working with the FAA on the cuts, and all expect to be flexible with travelers who are impacted by the cuts. Delta, for instance, has already issued a flexible travel waiver for those left stranded this week. Same with United, American Airlines, and JetBlue.
Even if your airport is not on the list, all travelers should check with their airline before heading to the airport.
