Air Canada Offers Flexible Travel Options Amid Venezuela Crisis
by Marsha Mowers
Air Canada is enhancing service for Economy passengers.
Global Affairs Canada has updated its official Travel Advice and Advisories for Venezuela, urging Canadians to avoid all travel to the country after the U.S military attack over the weekend that led to the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and first lady Cilia Adela Flores.
The government warns that the situation is volatile and could escalate at short notice, including the possibility that borders and airspace could close without warning. The airspace was closed to U.S airlines after the attack, leading to the delay and cancellation of numerous flights in the Caribbean.
It has since reopened though FlightAware is reporting a ripple delay effect as flight schedules return to normal. Air Canada is offering free flight changes for eligible tickets bought no later than Jan. 2, 2026, for travel taking place between now and Jan. 6, 2026, on itineraries to or from several Caribbean destinations, including Aruba, the Dominican Republic, and Saint Lucia.
Canada’s Embassy in Caracas has been closed since 2019, and consular services for Canadians in Venezuela are now handled remotely through the Embassy of Canada in Bogotá, Colombia. CTV News reports Global Affairs Canada said it is not aware of any Canadian citizens who have been injured as a result of recent events.
Travel advisors should stay in close contact with airline partners and monitor schedule updates for clients whose Caribbean flights might still be affected by the broader regional situation.
