Intrepid Travel has announced a new partnership with REI Co-op to offer two collections of small group adventure tours: REI Exclusive and REI Recommended.
REI shut down its adventure travel business, REI Experiences, last January, citing a lack of profitability.
Now, the specialty outdoor retailer is back in the business of guided adventure travel, with a new line of trips for REI members. Operated by Intrepid, the collections are set to launch in January.
“We are pleased to introduce immersive travel experiences in partnership with Intrepid that allow our customers and members to foster meaningful connections with new cultures and landscapes in bucket-list destinations,” said Susan Viscon, REI’s chief new ventures and impact officer. “These trips are designed to bring together REI members’ deep appreciation for familiar outdoor spaces and the thrill of discovering the unknown, while reflecting the co-op’s core values of time outside, inclusion, and sustainability.”
The REI Exclusive collection includes 28 trips co-created by Intrepid. These range from three to 14 days in length. The REI Recommended collection features over 55 of Intrepid’s best-selling trips, endorsed by REI. These span across 32 countries, ranging from four to 15 days in length.
Both collections will be available to book through REI, but only the Recommended range is cross-listed through Intrepid Travel.
While these itineraries can be booked by anyone, REI members do receive a 15% discount on the Exclusive trips and will receive a 20% off coupon for the retail store when booking a Recommended journey.
As part of the partnership, Intrepid’s travel books will be available to purchase via the Co-op.
“We know REI members are seeking unique, authentic and meaningful travel experiences grounded in community,” said Leigh Barnes, president of the Americas at Intrepid Travel. “By combining REI’s deep outdoor expertise with Intrepid’s recognized approach to responsible and locally-led tourism, we’re making it easier for curious members to seek out the unknown and experience the world.”
