T+L’s 41 Best Destinations For 2017

by Richard D’Ambrosio  January 23, 2017

Travel + Leisure
magazine’s February edition includes its annual list of suggestions for the coming year’s best cities and countries for travelers to visit, and some of the destinations are not what most of your clients might think about.

Countries like Bolivia (“an emerging true culture capital”) and a “reborn” Bermuda are featured in a front-half, eight-page feature. In addition, T+L recommends cities like Jerusalem (“a culinary force”), Rotterdam (“stealing Amsterdam’s spotlight”), Cincinnati and the wine region of Valle de Guadalupe.

February’s edition also includes T+L’s nine-page “Guide to Expedition Cruising,” a look at ships and itineraries to remote waters and previously inaccessible coastlines. Australia’s Kimberley Coast and the waters between Alaska and Russia are featured, as are cruises from National Geographic, Celebrity Cruises, Silversea and Crystal Cruises.

Be sure to read the article about the Moroccan holy village of Moulay Idriss, recently opened to non-Muslims under a recent decree by the King of Morocco. Writer Anna Heyward visited last spring, and describes how the city, a four-hour drive from Casablanca to the top of two hills at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, is adapting to these changes.

Also, Chef Michael Beary, who runs a famous restaurant in Aspen, CO, takes an agri-tourism visit to the Mexican state of Oaxaca, where farms and markets offer the off-the-beaten-trail traveler a different view of Mexican food.

Toward the back of the book, Tom Robbins journeys up and down the Austrian Alps, as St. Anton, Zurs and Lech become “one massive, 87-lift ski area, one of the largest and most diverse in the world.” We also take a warm dive into the waters of the South Pacific, where Maggie Shipstead, accompanied by the stunning photography of Sean Fennessy, conquers our fears of getting close to 40-ton whales.
