Celebrity Cruises has chosen Chef Janaína Torres as Godmother of Celebrity Xcel, marking the first time a major cruise line has appointed a Brazilian chef in such a role.
Torres is widely recognized for her innovative approach to cuisine. She was named Best Female Chef in the World 2024 by “World’s 50 Best,” and is a central figure in the Brazilian culinary scene. Her restaurant A Casa do Porco in São Paulo is regarded as one of the best in the world and has earned a Michelin green star.
“We are honored for Chef Janaína Torres, a trailblazer in the culinary industry, to be Godmother of Celebrity Xcel,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, president of Celebrity Cruises. “Janaína shares our commitment to celebrating and sharing global culture through elevated culinary experiences, connecting diners with culture through unique food experiences.”
As part of her godmother duties, Torres will christen Celebrity Xcel during the official naming ceremony on Nov. 16.
Celebrity’s newest ship, Xcel will set sail in November. It will be the fifth Edge-class ship, following Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent, and will replace Eden. Celebrity Xcel’s inaugural voyages will sail the Mediterranean Sea into the 2026 European season, with itineraries lasting from seven to 11 nights. In winter 2026 to 2027, the ship will head to the Caribbean out of Miami for its second season.
“I’ve always believed that fine dining should be accessible, not intimidating. Food brings us together, connecting us through new flavors, traditions, and shared memories,” said Torres. “I’m proud to partner with Celebrity Cruises to showcase our culture and cuisine on a global stage.”
