Hurtigruten, an expedition cruise company, announced today that it has signed an order of memorandum with Norway’s Kleven Verft AS shipyard to add a third hybrid-powered expedition ship to its fleet in 2021.
The ship will mirror MS Roald Amundsen and MS Fridtjof Nansen, the line’s two other ships currently under construction at Kleven Verft. It will be able to accommodate 530 guests with an ice-strengthened hull that will allow it to sail expedition itineraries around the world.
“We are thrilled to introduce yet another revolutionary hybrid-powered expedition ship. This groundbreaking vessel will take our guests to some of the most spectacular areas of our planet, in a more sustainable and environmentally friendly way than ever seen before,” Hurtigruten CEO Daniel Skjeldam said in a statement.
The new ship, along with the MS Roald Amundsen and the MS Fridtjof Nansen, will all be powered by larger, more sustainable hybrid batteries.
In total, Hurtigruten will have 17 ships in service, sailing itineraries from Antarctica to South America, Norway, Greenland, and more.
“We strongly believe that Hurtigruten, and our responsible and innovative approach to sustainable solutions, is the perfect fit for the modern-day explorer,” Skjeldam said. “Hurtigruten is experiencing a substantial global growth. The expansion we have seen so far, is just the beginning.”
