Bold Luxury Meets Bold Adventure in The Chairman’s Collection from Scenic Luxury Cruises

by Naomi Tomky  March 11, 2024
Bold Luxury Meets Bold Adventure in The Chairman’s Collection from Scenic Luxury Cruises

From ice-breaking polar expeditions to smooth sailing in the South Pacific, Scenic Luxury Cruises takes guests farther, with smaller ships and bigger adventures. Catering to the bold and the curious, Scenic’s award-winning yachts, the Scenic Eclipse and Scenic Eclipse II, offer intimate, ultra-luxury cruises to the Antarctic, Arctic, and everywhere in between.

Pioneering the concept of Luxpedition™, Scenic’s luxury expedition voyages keep trips small, with a maximum of 228 guests onboard (200 in Polar regions) and are the only ships with two helicopters and a submersible. Along with the fleet of zodiacs, kayaks, and paddleboards stowed on the bottom of the ship for quicker boarding, they allow guests to get out faster and explore more: from above, below, and on the water. Twenty expert historians, geologists, archaeologists, and more make up the Discovery Team, guiding guests through each destination with on-board and on-land lectures, plus on-water tours.

The oversized stabilizers on the Polar Class 6 discovery yacht keep the ship sailing smoothly as passengers enjoy 10 dining options, treatments at the Senses Spa, and an almost 1:1 ratio of staff to guests. Butler service caters to the spacious suites, each fitted with Egyptian cotton sheets, lounge areas, and private verandahs.

Scenic recently introduced The Chairman’s Collection, a special lineup of cruises handpicked by Glen Moroney, founder, and chairman of Scenic Luxury Cruises. These specialty sailings, designed for intrepid spirits looking for unique exploration, take passengers to the remote corners of the earth – without sacrificing the comforts of home. Read on for highlights of the series.

Eastern Greenland & Iceland Expedition
Explore the world’s largest fjord system, hike around geologic wonders, and kayak among icebergs in mirror-smooth bays. This 14-day trip departs from Reykjavik on August 14, 2024, to cruise among active volcanoes and to thundering waterfalls. Guests will visit one of the most isolated places in Eastern Greenland, remote Ittoqqortoormiit, where Inuit hunters, trappers and fishermen live off the ocean and navigate the sea ice.

The nimble Scenic Eclipse navigates into the Kaiser Franz Josef Fjord, a red-rock wonderland of wind- and wave-sculpted icebergs, and throughout the trip, the expert Discovery Team leads guests on walks across blossoming tundra to see musk oxen families, pure white Arctic hare, and blue Arctic foxes, or on zodiac safaris watching for hauled-out walruses and migratory whales.

Passage through Melanesia: Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, & Vanuatu
Over 1,000 islands dot the Pacific Ocean, concealing volcanic peaks, azure lagoons teeming with marine life, and picture-perfect palm fringed beaches. When the Scenic Eclipse II leaves Cairns, Australia, for its 13-day journey to Fiji on October 1, 2024, it embarks on an adventure through vivid landscapes, idyllic waters, and into diverse and welcoming cultures.

In the Solomon Islands, guests can visit World War II relics and monuments to learn about the Battle of Guadalcanal, snorkel, or kayak around the island of Owaraha’s beautiful coral reefs, get welcomed with a traditional cultural bamboo band and dancers to Ndende, and spot endemic birds like the Vanikoro white-eye and the Vanikoro monarch.

The powdery white sand and crystalline waters of Vanuatu’s Champagne Bay earn it the reputation of one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, while Ambrym’s black sand matches the black magic of local demonstrations. A continuously erupting volcano, dugongs, and breathtaking waterfalls fill the final days of the voyage before the ship pulls into Fiji.

Antarctica, South Georgia, & Falkland Islands

As Scenic Eclipse sails out of Buenos Aires for this 20-day itinerary (January 30, 2025), it leaves the enormous continent behind, seeking out small islands with big tales to tell, starting with the windswept green hills of the Falklands and the army of penguins and birdlife they harbor.

In South Georgia, photograph the impressively jagged mountains and walk through some of the world’s largest king penguin colonies. The waters teem with whales feasting on krill, orcas hunting in packs and elephant seal beachmasters busy guarding their harem.

The ship’s custom-built stabilizers, strengthened hull, and forward bow thrusters guide it smoothly through the Drake Passage to Antarctica, where passengers can slide open the floor-to-ceiling doors to their private verandah to see glaciated mountains towering out of the ocean, thousands of meters tall, and scan the ice and water for penguins, seals, and whales.

Daily excursions by zodiac, kayak, and paddleboard bring guests up to ice formations, penguin rookeries, and whale feeding frenzies, while the custom-built submersible and pair of helicopters offer alternative views of the landscape during the 18-20 hours of daylight.
