United Eliminates International Change Fees

United Airlines joined its industry competitors on Wednesday, announcing that it would be waiving international change fees permanently for international flights and extending its waiver for domestic change fees through March 2021.

United’s announcement on Wednesday coincided with a similar announcement from Delta, and continued the trend of airlines giving consumers more flexibility in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to United, all fees on international tickets purchased in the United States will now be eliminated permanently and the domestic change fee waiver will also include basic economy tickets through March 2021.

The hope is that the move, which joins other moves made with consumer confidence in mind including the debut of a virtual customer service program, helps revive some bookings for United, which, like the rest of the industry, has been hit hard by the pandemic.

Talking to FOX Business on Wednesday, a United rep said that the carrier recognizes that “flexibility is more important to our customers than ever.”

United was one of the first major carriers to make alterations to its change fee policies—in August, United announced it would be cutting its $200 change fee as part of a new “playbook” for the airline.
